Hydrodynamics and Deposition in Lacustrine Shallow-Water Delta Front: A Combination of Numerical Simulations and Modern Sedimentation Measurements.Yunlong Zhang, Zhidong Bao, Luxing Dou, Li Jiang, Mingyang Wei & Li Zhang - 2020 - Interpretation 8 (3):SM39-SM52.
With the exploration of tight oil and gas, shallow-water deltaic reservoirs have been attracting more and more attention. The sedimentary architecture of a shallow-water delta shows (...) distinctive differences with that of a deep-slope delta. These differences may be associated with the mechanism and characteristics of the deposition in the area where the sediments unloaded. Based on modern sedimentary research of the Poyang Lake in China, this paper focuses on the processes of river flow entering a lake with a low dip angle. We conducted six sets of numerical simulations with different initial sedimentary flow velocities using Fluent software for analyzing the hydrodynamics and the sediment transportation in the shallow-water delta. We combined the simulation results with an analysis of the geomorphology of the Gangjiang Delta to reveal the deposition along the shoreline of the lacustrine shallow-water delta. The numerical simulation shows that the shallow-water delta is dominated by bed friction with an extensive hydrodynamical boundary layer. The bed shear stress, which varies with the changes in river flux, dominated the sediment transport and deposition at the shallow-water delta front, where the effluent flow mixes with lake water. The distributary channels show characteristics of repeatedly occurred erosion, scouring, filling, and reoccupation. We argue that the depositional characteristics are associated with the changes in bed shear stress controlled by variation of flow velocity. Mouth bars are less likely to grow to a reasonable scale because of the seasonal scouring of extreme floods. Moreover, the lake flow potentially reworks the mouth bars. Consequently, mouth bar deposits were difficult to preserve as hydrocarbon reservoirs in ancient shallow-water delta. (shrink)

Natale, Barry Smith, Yu Lin, Xiaowei Wang & Zixing Liu - 2015 - In IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine (IEEE BIBM 2015),. pp. 975-982.
Research has indicated that microRNAs (miRNAs), a special class of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), can perform important roles in different biological and pathological processes. miRNAsfunctions are (...)realized by regulating their respective target genes (targets). It is thus critical to identify and analyze miRNA-target interactions for a better understanding and delineation of miRNAsfunctions. However, conventional knowledge discovery and acquisition methods have many limitations. Fortunately, semantic technologies that are based on domain ontologies can render great assistance in this regard. In our previous investigations, we developed a miRNA domain-specific application ontology, Ontology for MIcroRNA Target (OMIT), to provide the community with common data elements and data exchange standards in the miRNA research. This paper describes (1) our continuing efforts in the OMIT ontology development and (2) the application of the OMIT to enable a semantic approach for knowledge capture of miRNA-target interactions. An Inferential Account of Model Explanation.Wei Fang - 2019 - Philosophia 47 (1):99-116.
This essay develops an inferential account of model explanation, based on Mauricio Suárezs inferential conception of scientific representation and Alisa Bokulichs counterfactual account of model explanation (...). It is suggested that the fact that a scientific model can explain is essentially linked to how a modeler uses an established model to make various inferences about the target system on the basis of results derived from the model. The inference practice is understood as a two-step activity, with the first step involving making counterfactual statements about the model itself and the second step involving making hypothetical statements transferring over claims derived from the model onto the target. To illustrate how this two-step activity proceeds, an agent-based simulation model is discussed. (shrink)

In particular, we select eight exchange rates whose trading volume accounts for more than 98 (...)% market shares to synthesize Bitcoin indexes. The empirical results based on multifractal detrended cross-correlation analysis reveal that the nonlinear dependencies and power-law cross-correlations in return-volume relationship are found; all cross-correlations are multifractal, and there are antipersistent behaviors of cross-correlation for q=2; the price of small fluctuations is more persistent than that of the volume, while the volume of larger fluctuations is more antipersistent; and the rolling window method shows that the cross-correlations of return-volume are antipersistent in the entire sample period. University StudentsPerceptions of Academic Cheating: Triangulating Quantitative and Qualitative Findings.Tianlan Wei, Steven R. Chesnut, Lucy Barnard-Brak & Marcelo Schmidt - 2014 - Journal of Academic Ethics 12 (4):287-298.
Using a parallel mixed-methods design, the current study examined university studentsperceptions of academic cheating through collecting and analyzing both the quantitative and qualitative data. Our (...)quantitative findings corroborate previous research that male students have engaged more in academic cheating than females based on studentsself-reports, and that undergraduate students are less willing to discuss issues on academic cheating as compared with their graduate counterparts. Five themes emerged from the thematic analysis of the qualitative data: flexible definitions for cheating, environmental promotion of cheating, the moral transgression of cheating, cheating as an ambiguous justification, and cheating as a conscious decision making process. The mixed-methods findings indicate that there is no relationship between studentsgender or classification and their endorsements of the qualitative themes. However, non-White students are more likely to endorse the themecheating as an ambiguous justification.” Implications for reducing and preventing academic cheating at the university level are discussed. WeiJin Period XuanxueNeoDaoism’: ReWorking the Relationship Between Confucian and Daoist Themes.Paul J. D'Ambrosio - 2016 - Philosophy Compass 11 (11):621-631.
In recent years, philosophical ideas developed during the Wei-Jin period, broadly referred to as xuanxue in Chinese andNeo-DaoismorDark Learningin English, have been (...) accorded increasing attention in academia. This article provides an introduction to some major thinkers of the Wei-Jin period, addressing both their original writings and recent scholarly interpretations. The article aims to demonstrate that many Wei-Jin period intellectuals formed their theories through reinterpreting the relationship between texts associated with Daoism and Confucianism. Thinkers of this period often attempted to show how these definingschoolsof pre-Qin Chinese thought did not propose theories that were fundamentally inconsistent, and that their ideas could be woven together as elements of a coherent view. This intellectual movement can thus be, and often has been, viewed as an attempt to integrate Daoism and Confucianism. However, a more nuanced reading demonstrates that these thinkers were reworking the relationship between what were seen as predominately Daoist or Confucian themes from their very foundation. Accordingly, the common description of Wei-Jin thinkers asDaoistis decidedly incongruous. (shrink)

Stability and Multistability of a Bounded Rational Mixed Duopoly Model with Homogeneous Product.Wei Zhou, Na Zhao, Tong Chu & Ying-Xiang Chang - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-16.
In this paper, a mixed duopoly dynamic model with bounded rationality is built, where a public-private joint venture and a private enterprise produce homogeneous products and (...)compete in the same market. The purpose of this research is to study the stability and the multistability of the established model. The local stability of all the equilibrium points is discussed by using Jury condition, and the stability region of the Nash equilibrium point has been given. A special fractal structure calledhub of periodicityhas been found in the two-parameter space by numerical simulation. In addition, the phenomena of multistability are also studied using basins of attraction and 1-D bifurcation diagrams with adiabatic initial conditions. We find that there are two different coexistences of multiple attractors. And, the fractal structure of the attracting basin is also analyzed, and the formation mechanisms ofholesandcontactbifurcation have been revealed. At last, the long-term profits of the enterprises are studied. We find that some enterprises can even make more profits under a chaotic circumstance. (shrink)
