    Atomic Mechanism of the Re and Ru Strengthening Effect on the Γ-ΓInterface of Ni-Based Single-Crystal Superalloys: A First-Principles Study.K. Chen, L. Zhao & John Tse - 2003 - Philosophical Magazine 83 (14):1685-1698.
A possible atomic mechanism underlying the Re- and Ru-induced strengthening effects on the &#110 - &#110 ' interface in Ni-based single-crystal superalloys has been investigated using (...)the DMol3 molecular orbital package based on density functional theory. The calculation of bonding properties has been performed on a cluster designed to model Re and Ru strengthening effects within the interface. The stronger Re--Ni bonds are formed mainly as a result of d- hybridization, while the Ni--Ni bonding become weaker accompanying the Re substitution. The vertical and horizontal bond orders for a local environmental cluster are proposed and developed for the description of the strengthening effect on the &#110 - &#110 ' interface, with larger bond order values achieving better effect. Results show that both Re and Ru significantly strengthen the interface. It is also shown that the strengthening effect of Re is better than that of Ru, and this is explained in terms of the charge transfer of electrons between orbitals of Ru atom according to Mulliken population analysis. The calculation results provide a basis for understanding the atomic mechanism of Re- and Ru-induced &#110 - &#110 ' interfacial strengthening. (shrink)

Ni Kāmakarma: How Desireless Need One Be?1.Christopher Framarin - 2004 - Asian Philosophy 14 (3):239-254.
In the Bhagavadg?t? K a advises Arjuna to act without desire. He also describes the ni k?makarmin as possessed of perfect equanimity. Some scholars have argued (...) that K a's advice is a contradiction. Because action requires desire, desireless action is impossible. Others have claimed that this fact only suggests that K a's prohibition is against a subset of desires and not desire as a whole. These ?subset? positions, however, are not consistent with the equanimity requirement. The conclusion that K a's advice is a contradiction can be avoided however. The word ?desire? in English is ambiguous. In one sense it means ?whatever motivated?, and in another sense it means a ?desire proper? in contrast to beliefs and other mental states. If it is possible that not only desires proper motivate, then it is possible to act desirelessly in this sense. This distinction, I will argue, makes the best sense of K a's advice. (shrink)

Confucius: The Man and the Way of Gongfu by Peimin Ni[REVIEW]Andrew Lambert Jr - 2017 - Philosophy East and West 68 (1):1-4.
In Confucius: the Man and the Way of Gongfu, Peimin Ni offers an overview of the historical Confucius and his organic vision of how to live. Ni' (...)s motivation is that many comparable introductions are "simply repeating his life story and listing his main ideas". Ni insists that, "we have to get to the depth required by Confucius' thought", which will then explain why Confucius' influence has endured. The book is structured as six chapters, each focusing on one aspect of Confucius: as historical figure, as spiritual leader, as philosopher, as political reformer, as educator and as a person. A full understanding of Confucius, Ni states, requires seeing how the different aspects inform each other, like a... (shrink)

    Rotational Bands in the Semi-Magic Nucleus Ni-57(28)29.D. Rudolph, I. Ragnarsson, W. Reviol, C. Andreoiu, M. A. Bentley, M. P. Carpenter, R. J. Charity, R. M. Clark, M. Cromaz, J. Ekman, C. Fahlander, P. Fallon, E. Ideguchi, A. O. Macchiavelli, M. N. Mineva, D. G. Sarantites, D. Seweryniak & S. J. Williams - unknown
Two rotational bands have been identified and characterized in the proton-magic N = Z + 1 nucleus Ni-57. These bands complete the systematics of well-and superdeformed (...)rotational bands in the light nickel isotopes starting from doubly magic Ni-56 to Ni-60. High-spin states in Ni-57 have been produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction Si-28(S-32, 2p1n)Ni-57 and studied with the gamma-ray detection array GAMMASPHERE operated in conjunction with detectors for evaporated light charged particles and neutrons. The features of the rotational bands in Ni-57 are compared to those of neighbouring isotopes and interpreted by means of configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The two observed high-spin bands are considered signature partners and assigned to configurations with one 1g(9/2) proton and one 1g(9/2) neutron, resulting in an unambiguous understanding of the energetically favoured signature alpha = -1/2 band but a somewhat less satisfactory description of the signature alpha = +1/2 band. Observations of Glide and Decomposition of a Dislocations at High Temperatures in Ni-Al Single Crystals Deformed Along the Hard Orientation.R. Srinivasan, M. Daw, R. Noebe & M. Mills - 2003 - Philosophical Magazine 83 (9):1111-1135.
Ni-44 at.% Al and Ni-50 at.% Al single crystals were tested in compression in the hard &#100 001 &#162 orientation. The dislocation processes and deformation behaviour (...) were studied as a function of temperature, strain and strain rate. A slip transition in NiAl occurs from a &#100 111 &#162 slip to non- a &#100 111 &#162 slip at intermediate temperatures. In Ni-50 at.% Al single crystals, only a &#100 010 &#162 dislocations are observed above the slip transition temperature. In contrast, a &#100 101 &#162 {101} glide has been observed to control deformation beyond the slip transition temperature in Ni-44 at.% Al. a &#100 101 &#162 dislocations are observed primarily along both &#100 111 &#162 directions in the glide plane. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations show that the core of the a &#100 101 &#162 dislocations along these directions is decomposed into two a &#100 010 &#162 dislocations, separated by a distance of approximately 2 nm. The temperature window of stability for these a &#100 101 &#162 dislocations depends upon the strain rate. At a strain rate of 1.4 &#50 10 &#109 4 s &#109 1 , a &#100 101 &#162 dislocations are observed between 800 and 1000 K. Complete decomposition of a &#100 101 &#162 dislocations into a &#100 010 &#162 dislocations occurs beyond 1000 K, leading to a &#100 010 &#162 climb as the deformation mode at higher temperatures. At lower strain rates, decomposition of a &#100 101 &#162 dislocations has been observed to occur along the edge orientation at temperatures below 1000 K. Embedded-atom method calculations and experimental results indicate that a &#100 101 &#162 dislocations have a large Peierls stress at low temperatures. Based on the present microstructural observations and a survey of the literature with respect to vacancy content and diffusion in NiAl, a model is proposed for a &#100 101 &#162 {101} glide in Ni-44 at.% Al, and for the observed yield strength versus temperature behaviour of Ni-Al alloys at intermediate and high temperatures.
The growing awareness that each culture brings unique riches to the world has revealed the danger of certain languages possibly becoming extinct which led to many calls for support and stimulated research to move in new directions. Yet the extinction of little-spoken languages is not due to the spread of the main languages used for communication. The evolution of any language can be seen as the result of national government policy, but is dependent, first and foremost, on the choices of individuals which express community bonds: local languages show the will of a group of individuals to place themselves in a relationship with their ancestors and with other groups bound by emotional and cultural ties as they have no access to political power. An individual's choice comes, secondly, as a response to the desire to be in the public and/or international arena, and to be part of sustainable development. Lastly, it reflects the desire to play around with the infinitely varied combinations of meanings, sounds and shapes that make each language a treasure, the value of which cannot be evaluated in mere economic terms. In other words, the concepts of usefulness and of pleasure are both involved in a long-lasting struggle against the mighty linguistic hegemonies that cause them to wane. These concepts should also be taken into account by a policy on linguistic diversity which, while recognising that each language carries a variety of values, would not see current developments as necessarily leading to the decline of other languages and would, likewise, not overly favour speaking only French or English. When taken neither as angels nor as devils, languages would come out all the stronger, viewed against their historical and political backgrounds. (shrink)
