Yuanfang Dai argues that, despite the many forms of gender oppression in different societies and cultures, it is still possible to speak generally of women’s oppression. This notion of shared oppression can inform a transcultural feminist solidarity that challenges structural gender oppression across social and cultural differences.
Nonnegative Matrix Factorization is a significant big data analysis technique. However, standard NMF regularized by simple graph does not have discriminative function, and traditional graph models cannot accurately reflect the problem of multigeometry information between data. To solve the above problem, this paper proposed a new method called Hypergraph Regularized Discriminative Nonnegative Matrix Factorization, which captures intrinsic geometry by constructing hypergraphs rather than simple graphs. The introduction of the hypergraph method allows high-order relationships between samples to be considered, and the (...) introduction of label information enables the method to have discriminative effect. Both the hypergraph Laplace and the discriminative label information are utilized together to learn the projection matrix in the standard method. In addition, we offered a corresponding multiplication update solution for the optimization. Experiments indicate that the method proposed is more effective by comparing with the earlier methods. Previous urban traffic network-based studies have been based mostly on single-layer networks. Based on their shortcomings, starting from the perspective of a multilayer urban traffic network, this paper takes the different anticongestion abilities and network characteristics of various network structures under the condition of traffic congestion as the research object. Then, a comparative experiment is performed via simulation, and the optimal multilayer urban traffic network topology is obtained under different conditions. It is found that these scale-free related multilayer networks have (...) relatively strong ability to support more traffic flows and have higher anticongestion abilities, regardless of whether it is a lower-layer or upper-layer network. The research results are helpful to deepen our understanding of the characteristics of traffic network structures, help scholars further cognize the structural properties of multilayer urban traffic networks, practically help urban traffic network planners to further optimize the urban traffic network, and broaden the study of multilayer traffic networks. In this paper, a nutrient-phytoplankton model, which is described by a system of ordinary differential equations incorporating the effect of cell size, and its corresponding stochastic differential equation version are studied analytically and numerically. A key advantage of considering cell size effect is that it can more accurately reveal the intrinsic law of interaction between nutrient and phytoplankton. The main purpose of this paper is to research how cell size affects the nutrient-phytoplankton dynamics within the deterministic and stochastic environments. Mathematically, (...) we show that the existence and stability of the equilibria in the deterministic model can be determined by cell size: the smaller or larger cell size can lead to the disappearance of the positive equilibrium, but the boundary equilibrium always exists and is globally asymptotically stable; the intermediate cell size is capable to drive the positive equilibrium to appear and be globally asymptotically stable, whereas the boundary equilibrium becomes unstable. In the case of the stochastic model, the stochastic dynamics including the stochastic extinction, persistence in the mean, and the existence of ergodic stationary distribution is found to be largely dependent on cell size and noise intensity. Ecologically, via numerical simulations, it is found that the smaller cell size or larger cell size can result in the extinction of phytoplankton, which is similar to the effect of larger random environmental fluctuations on the phytoplankton. More interestingly, it is discovered that the intermediate cell size is the optimal size for promoting the growth of phytoplankton, but increasing appropriately the cell size can rapidly reduce phytoplankton density and nutrient concentrations at the same time, which provides a possible strategy for biological control of algal blooms. This paper presents an oral history of farming in the Southern Yangtze Valley in China, covering the period from pre-liberation to recent market liberalization. Using the stories and observations of 31 elderly residents of a small water town, the paper describes the hard labor of traditional farming practices and the acquiescence of many when, post-liberation, they could leave farming for better-paid factory work. However, in a departure from conventional analyses, these oral histories suggest that the co-dependency culture of traditional farming (...) has broken down, and farmers are unwilling to return to the land and continue farming. The changes in knowledge cultures of local farmers in recent decades are not likely to lead to pathways to working with incoming modern “outsider farmers,” nor able to be blended with potential new “urbanite” knowledges of those who might wish to increase organic farming. The current knowledge cultures of these farmers has shifted as needed to the optimization of family unit needs, naturally leading them to urbanization and the relinquishing of their ties to the land. For cultural rather than economic reasons, these farmers see themselves as the last peasant farmers of Tianshanzhuang. (shrink)
This article introduces a non-Anglophone concept of gong qi as a metaphor for ‘corporation’. It contributes an endogenous perspective from a Sino-Japanese organizational context that enriches mainstream business ethics literature, otherwise heavily reliant on Western traditions. We translate the multi-layered meanings of gong qi based on analysis of its ideograms, its references into classical philosophies, and contemporary application in this Japanese multinational corporation in China. Gong qi contributes a perspective that sees a corporation as an inclusive and virtuous social entity, (...) and also addresses the elusive, implicit, and forever evolving nature of organizational life that is rarely noticed. We propose gong qi can be applied in other organizations and wider cultural contexts to show a new way of seeing and understanding business ethics and organization. Rather than considering virtue as a list of definable individual qualities, we suggest that the metaphor of gong qi reveals how virtue can be experienced as indeterminate, yet immanently present, like the substance of emptiness. This, then allows us to see the virtue of immanence, the beauty of implicitness, and hence, the efficacy of gong qi. (shrink)
The DAMA project is an observatory for rare processes and it is operative deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. In particular, the DAMA/LIBRA (Large sodium Iodide Bulk for RAre processes) set-up consists of highly radiopure NaI(Tl) detectors for a total sensitive exposed mass of ≃250 kg. Recent results, obtained by this set-up by exploiting the model independent annual modulation signature of Dark Matter (DM) particles, have confirmed and improved those obtained by the former DAMA/NaI experiment. (...) A model independent evidence for the presence of Dark Matter particles in the galactic halo is cumulatively obtained at 8.2 σ C.L. No systematics or side reactions able to account for the measured modulation amplitude and to contemporaneously satisfy all the many specific requirements of the signature have been found or suggested by anyone over more than a decade. An example of one of the many possible model dependent corollary quests for the candidate particles and for the related astrophysical, nuclear and particle physics scenarios is presented considering the whole cumulative exposure. Future perspectives are shortly addressed. (shrink)
