Fault Tree Interval Analysis of Complex Systems Based on Universal Grey Operation.Feng Zhang, Shiwang Tan, Leilei Zhang, Yameng Wang & Yang Gao - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-8.
The objective of this study is to propose a new operation method based on the universal grey number to overcome the shortcomings of typical interval operation in solving system fault trees. First, the failure probability ranges of the bottom events are described according to the conversion rules between the interval number and universal grey number. A more accurate system reliability calculation is then obtained based on the logical relationship between the AND gates and OR gates of a fault tree and (...)

Justifying My Position in Your Terms: Cross-Cultural Argumentation in a Globalized World. [REVIEW]Yameng Liu - 1999 - Argumentation 13 (3):297-315.
A ‘community of minds’ has long been presumed to be a condition of possibility for genuine argumentative interactions. In part because of this disciplinary presupposition, argumentation scholars tend to exclude from their scope of inquiry conflict resolution among culturally heterogeneous and ideologically incompatible formations. Such a stance needs to be reexamined in view of recent developments in the on-going process of globalization. The unprecedented worldwide economic and financial integration has created for the first time a ‘generalized interest’ across national and (...)

    Argument in a Nutshell: Condensation as a Transfiguring Mechanism in Argumentative Discourse.Yameng Liu - 2004 - Argumentation 18 (1):43-59.
Although not generally regarded as a significant area of inquiry, the condensation of argumentative structures and the presence of `miniaturized' yet self-sufficient arguments in stand-alone, sub-discursive linguistic units, especially those below the level of a compound sentence, deserve a close look. Built skillfully into key words, catchy phrases, subtly appealing tropes, etc., these condensed arguments are often instrumental in accounting for the way some small linguistic units work magic on the audience. Taking such mini structures seriously holds two promises for (...)

Three Issues in the Argumentative Conception of Early Chinese Discourse.Yameng Liu - 1996 - Philosophy East and West 46 (1):33-58.
To conceptualize early Chinese discourse in terms of disputation over dao, more attention should be given to the contentious heteroglossia underneath the monological surface of many texts, to the canonized masters' role as rhetorical critics of their time, and to the politics of criteria and argumentation that penetrated to the very core of their discursive practices.

The Relationship Between Synsedimentary Fault Activity and Reservoir Quality — A Case Study of the Ek1 Formation in the Wang Guantun Area, China.Xixin Wang, Yuming Liu, Jiagen Hou, Shaohua Li, Qiangqiang Kang, Shuang Sun, Ling Ji, Jian Sun & Rui Ma - 2020 - Interpretation 8 (3):SM15-SM24.
The activity of synsedimentary faults plays an important role in controlling the distribution of sand bodies in basins and furthermore the porosity and permeability of reservoirs. We have used fault interpretation, the method of image and granularity size analysis, and the seismic pumping effect to investigate the control of the activity of the Kongdong fault on the development degree of the dissolution pores and grain size, further studying the controlling mechanism of the activity of synsedimentary faults on reservoir quality. The (...)

Optimality Conditions and Scalarization of Approximate Quasi Weak Efficient Solutions for Vector Equilibrium Problem.Yameng Zhang, Guolin Yu & Wenyan Han - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-7.
This paper is devoted to the investigation of optimality conditions for approximate quasi weak efficient solutions for a class of vector equilibrium problem. First, a necessary optimality condition for approximate quasi weak efficient solutions to VEP is established by utilizing the separation theorem with respect to the quasirelative interior of convex sets and the properties of the Clarke subdifferential. Second, the concept of approximate pseudoconvex function is introduced and its existence is verified by a concrete example. Under the assumption of (...)

Unintelligibility or Defeat: The Issue of Engagement in Philosophical Debates.Yameng Liu - 1997 - Argumentation 11 (4):479-491.
A recognition of the acutely terministic and agonistic character of philosophizing has led to the perception of a dilemma in philosophical debates: differing positions are capable of being maintained only at the expense of ‘mutual unintelligibility,’ and a real ‘contact of minds’ could never be achieved without one side of the controversy abandoning its position and the enabling argumentative tension ceasing to exist. This perception is sustainable, however, only if we continue to accept the assumption that a direct, unmediated confrontation (...)

In (2011) McLeod suggested that the first century Chinese philosopher Wang Chong 王充 may have been a pluralist about truth. In this reply I contest McLeod's interpretation of Wang Chong, and suggest "quasi-pluralism" (albeit more as an alternative to pluralism than as an interpretation of Wang Chong), which combines primitivism about the concept of truth with pluralism about justification.

    A Logical Journey: From Gödel to Philosophy.Hao Wang - 1996 - Bradford.
Hao Wang was one of the few confidants of the great mathematician and logician Kurt Gödel. _A Logical Journey_ is a continuation of Wang's _Reflections on Gödel_ and also elaborates on discussions contained in _From Mathematics to Philosophy_. A decade in preparation, it contains important and unfamiliar insights into Gödel's views on a wide range of issues, from Platonism and the nature of logic, to minds and machines, the existence of God, and positivism and phenomenology. The impact of (...)

Where Do I Come From? Metaphors in Sex Education Picture Books for Young Children in China.Jennifer Yameng Liang, Kay O’Halloran & Sabine Tan - 2016 - Metaphor and Symbol 31 (3):179-193.
ABSTRACTThis study examines the types of verbal, pictorial, and multimodal metaphors in the genre of sex education picture books for young children in Mainland China. Although being an educational discourse genre that is essentially concerned with transmitting scientific facts, sex education picture books employ a range of metaphors that categorize and construe the biological knowledge of human reproduction in a way that not only facilitates young children’s understanding of scientific concepts but also instills in them particular values and moralities that (...)

Wang Yangming and the Way of World Philosophy.Hwa Yol Jung - 2013 - Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy 12 (4):461-486.
This essay attempts to contextualize the importance of Wang Yangming’s 王陽明 philosophy in terms of world philosophy in the manner of Goethe’s innovative plan for “world literature” (Weltliteratur). China has the long history of philosophizing rather than non-philosophy contrary to the glaring and inexcusable misunderstanding of Hegel the Eurocentric universalist or monist. In today’s globalizing world of multicultural pluralism, ethnocentric universalism has become outdated and outmoded. Transversality, which is at once intercultural, interspecific, interdisciplinary, and intersensorial, is a far more (...)

Di er ci Qimeng (The second Enlightenment), by Wang Zhihe and Fan Meijun, is a timely book in Chinese about constructing a philosophical and practical way to contend with China's postmodernization. It combines Whitehead's process philosophy with a focus on Chinese modernity in order to map out a desirable postmodern society. It addresses the problem on several dimensions from policy making to basic value systems. The range of themes can be seen from the topics of the book's twelve chapters: (...)

    From Mathematics to Philosophy.Hao Wang - 1974 - London.
First published in 1974. Despite the tendency of contemporary analytic philosophy to put logic and mathematics at a central position, the author argues it failed to appreciate or account for their rich content. Through discussions of such mathematical concepts as number, the continuum, set, proof and mechanical procedure, the author provides an introduction to the philosophy of mathematics and an internal criticism of the then current academic philosophy. The material presented is also an illustration of a new, more general method (...)
