This article explores micro- and macro-level variables that influence the incidence of bribery payouts by firms. A rich data set with information from 55 countries was utilized to achieve this objective. Results of logit regression models indicate that there are a number of micro- and macro-level factors that significantly affect the incidence of bribery payouts. This suggests that it is not only the characteristics of a firm but also the environment of doing business that affect the firm's bribery decision. The (...)

Complex Dynamical Behaviors of a Fractional-Order System Based on a Locally Active Memristor.Yajuan Yu, Han Bao, Min Shi, Bocheng Bao, Yangquan Chen & Mo Chen - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-13.
A fractional-order locally active memristor is proposed in this paper. When driven by a bipolar periodic signal, the generated hysteresis loop with two intersections is pinched at the origin. The area of the hysteresis loop changes with the fractional order. Based on the fractional-order locally active memristor, a fractional-order memristive system is constructed. The stability analysis is carried out and the stability conditions for three equilibria are listed. The expression of the fractional order related to Hopf bifurcation is given. The (...)

To make a business case for corporate sustainability, firms must be able to sell their sustainable products. The influence that firm engagement with non-governmental organizations may have on consumer adoption of sustainable products has been neglected in previous research. We address this by embedding corporate sustainability in a cosmopolitan framework that connects firms, consumers, and civil society organizations based on the understanding of responsibility for global humanity that underlies both the sustainability and cosmopolitanism concepts. We hypothesize that firms’ sustainability engagement (...)

Argumentative Patterns in Chinese Medical Consultations.Dawei Pan, Yanjin Chen & Shier Ju - 2018 - Argumentation 32 (1):37-52.
Medical argumentation in non-Western societies has attracted little attention. In line with the pragma-dialectical approach to the study of argumentation, this article identifies a prototypical argumentative pattern in Chinese medical consultations. In addition to institutional preconditions, whose relevance to the argumentative pattern has been well cited, a factor that may be equally important has remained unnoticed: the preference for certain drugs, treatments or therapeutic measurements on the basis of folk interpretations of medical phenomena in individual ethnic groups. These preferences may (...)

Deep Metric Learning-Assisted 3D Audio-Visual Speaker Tracking Via Two-Layer Particle Filter.Yidi Li, Hong Liu, Bing Yang, Runwei Ding & Yang Chen - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-8.
For speaker tracking, integrating multimodal information from audio and video provides an effective and promising solution. The current challenges are focused on the construction of a stable observation model. To this end, we propose a 3D audio-visual speaker tracker assisted by deep metric learning on the two-layer particle filter framework. Firstly, the audio-guided motion model is applied to generate candidate samples in the hierarchical structure consisting of an audio layer and a visual layer. Then, a stable observation model is proposed (...)

Corporate Sustainable Development: Testing a New Scale Based on the Mainland Chinese Context. [REVIEW]Wing S. Chow & Yang Chen - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 105 (4):519-533.
According to the predominant corporate sustainable development (CSD) framework, this exploratory paper verifies that CSD construct can be modeled by integrating the dimensions of social, economic, and environmental development. We first developed and validated measurement scales for these three dimensions based on a survey of 314 managers in mainland China. Then, using structural equation modelling, we confirmed that the proposed model is valid. Therefore, our findings may allow researchers to explore CSD further, and practitioners to develop their understanding of CSD (...)

Statistical Characteristics and Community Analysis of Urban Road Networks.Wen-Long Shang, Yanyan Chen, Huibo Bi, Haoran Zhang, Changxi Ma & Washington Y. Ochieng - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-21.
Urban road networks are typical complex systems, which are crucial to our society and economy. In this study, topological characteristics of a number of urban road networks purely based on physical roads rather than routes of vehicles or buses are investigated in order to discover underlying unique structural features, particularly compared to other types of transport networks. Based on these topological indices, correlations between topological indices and small-worldness of urban road networks are also explored. The finding shows that there is (...)

A Method for Solving LiDAR Waveform Decomposition Parameters Based on a Variable Projection Algorithm.Ke Wang, Guolin Liu, Qiuxiang Tao, Luyao Wang & Yang Chen - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-13.
Light detection and ranging is commonly used to create high-resolution maps; however, the efficiency and convergence of parameter estimation are difficult. To address this issue, we evaluated the structural characteristics of received LiDAR signals by decomposing them into Gaussian functions and applied the variable projection algorithm of the separable nonlinear least-squares problem to the process of waveform fitting. First, using a variable projection algorithm, we separated the linear and nonlinear parameters in the Gaussian function model; the linear parameters are expressed (...)

Grey Spectrum Analysis of Air Quality Index and Housing Price in Handan.Kai Zhang, Yan Chen & Lifeng Wu - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-6.
To analyze the relationship between air quality index and housing price, six relationship indexes between air quality index and housing price were calculated using grey spectrum theory, specifically grey association spectrum, grey cospectrum, grey amplitude spectrum, grey phase spectrum, grey lag time length, and grey condense spectrum. Three main change periods were extracted. There was a negative correction between the air quality and the housing price in Handan. The results provide a basis for the government’s measures to prevent haze.

Guilt appeals have been found effective in stimulating ethical consumption behaviors in western cultures. However, studies performed in Confucian cultural contexts have found contradictory results. We aim to investigate the inconclusive results of research on guilt and ethical consumption and to explain the inconsistencies. We aim to better understand the influence of guilt on ethical consumption in a Chinese Confucian context and to explore the culturally relevant individual-level concept of interdependent self-construal as a moderator. We build our argument on the (...)

Memory Property of Grey Accumulation Generation Sequence.Lifeng Wu, Xiaohui Gao & Yan Chen - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-10.
The influence of grey accumulation generation operator on the memory of time sequence is discussed. Generalized Hurst exponent approach is used to calculate the memory in three cases, namely, the M3-Competition data, the air quality index in Beijing, Xingtai, and Handan, and the power generating capacity, and car production index in Hebei province. The result indicates that one order accumulation generation operator can weaken the volatility and strengthen the memory of time sequence. It also explains the reason that one-order accumulation (...)

This study examines the effect of teaching ethics and the form of code of ethics on auditors’ ethical decision making. We draw upon Rest’s decision-making model and Hunt and Vitell’s theory of marketing ethics to assist us with this examination. We use accounting students as substitutes for auditors in this study to enhance its internal validity as students are “subjects who would not already have detailed knowledge and experience of the Code”. The research method includes a survey and an experiment (...)

Faulting processes have created large damage zones with complex structures in the field; however, estimating the width and geometry of such fault structures in the subsurface is challenging due to a lack of data. Seismic attributes from seismic surveys have been used for the characterization of faults, but most cases do not detail the effectiveness of this approach. By using forward modeling and the associated seismic attributes of variance, four fault models of idealized damage zones are characterized and the frequency (...)

Application of Bi-Gaussian S-Transform in High-Resolution Seismic Time-Frequency Analysis.Zixiang Cheng, Wei Chen, Yangkang Chen, Ying Liu, Wei Liu, Huijian Li & Runfei Yang - 2017 - Interpretation: SEG 5 (1):SC1-SC7.
The S-transform is one of the most widely used methods of time-frequency analysis. It combines the respective advantages of the short-time Fourier transform and wavelet transforms with scale-dependent resolution using Gaussian windows, scaled inversely with frequency. One of the problems with the traditional symmetric Gaussian window is the degradation of time resolution in the time-frequency spectrum due to the long front taper. We have studied the performance of an improved S-transform with an asymmetric bi-Gaussian window. The asymmetric bi-Gaussian window can (...)

    Probing the Subsurface Karst Features Using Time-Frequency Decomposition.Yangkang Chen - 2016 - Interpretation: SEG 4 (4):T533-T542.
The high-resolution mapping of karst features is of great importance to hydrocarbon discovery and recovery in the resource exploration field. Currently, however, there are few effective methods specifically tailored for such a task. The 3D seismic data can reveal the existence of karsts to some extent, but a precise characterization cannot be obtained. I have developed an effective framework for accurately probing the subsurface karst features using a well-developed time-frequency decomposition algorithm. More specifically, I have introduced a frequency interval analysis (...)
