Valence Evaluation with Approaching or Withdrawing Cues: Directly Testing ValenceArousal Conflict Theory.Yan Mei Wang, Ting Li & Lin Li - 2018 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (4):904-912.
The valencearousal conflict theory assumes that both valence and arousal will trigger approaching or withdrawing tendencies. It also predicts that the speed of processing emotional stimuli (...)will depend on whether valence and arousal trigger conflicting or congruent motivational tendencies. However, most previous studies have provided evidence of the interaction between valence and arousal only, and have not provided direct proof of the interactive links between valence, arousal and motivational tendencies. The present study provides direct evidence for the relationship between approachwithdrawal tendencies and the valencearousal conflict. In an empirical test, participants were instructed to judge the valence of emotional words after visualspatial cues that appeared to be either approaching or withdrawing from participants. A three-way interaction was observed such that the response time was shorter if participants responded to a negative high-arousal stimulus after a withdrawing cue, or to a positive low-arousal stimulus after an approaching cue. These findings suggest that the approachwithdrawal tendency indeed plays a crucial role in valencearousal conflict, and that the effect depends on the congruency of valence, arousal and tendency at an early stage of processing. Intelligent Controllers for Multirobot Competitive and Dynamic Tracking.Mei Liu, Shuai Li, Xiaodi Li, Long Jin, Chenfu Yi & Zhiguan Huang - 2018 - Complexity 2018:1-12.
This paper focuses on the problem of target tracking using k fittest robots in a group of n mobile robots with n>k. We present centralized and (...)distributed coordination models with all-to-all and limited communications, respectively. For the case of all-to-all communication between robots, theoretical analysis is presented to prove the exponential stability of the whole system. In real applications of robotic networks, a robot may only be allowed to exchange information with a limited number of neighbors. In such a limited communication case where centralized quantity is not available, a consensus filter is used to estimate the centralized quantities in a distributed way, and a distributed competitive target tracking is thus achieved. The stability of the distributed control is also proved in theory. Finally, illustrative examples are provided and analyzed to substantiate the efficacy of the proposed models for tracking moving target in a competition manner with all-to-all communications and limited communications. Benevolent Creativity Buffers Anxiety Aroused by Mortality Salience: Terror Management in COVID-19 Pandemic.Yu-Xin Cui, Xiang Zhou, Chong Zu, Hong-Kun Zhai, Bo-Ren Bai, Yu-Mei Xu & Duo Li - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis, the public keeps getting epidemic-related information on the media. News reports on the increasing number of fatalities have exposed (...) individuals to death, which causes negative emotional experiences such as tension, anxiety, and fear. This study aimed to investigate whether creativity could serve as an anxiety-buffer when mortality is salient. Based on previous findings, the present study utilized type of creative task and personal search for meaning as moderators. In Study 1, a 2 × 2 between-subject design was utilized, and 168 subjects were randomly assigned to four experimental conditions. In Study 2, 221 subjects were recruited. The experimental procedure was similar to Study 1, except that the priming paradigm of mortality was changed and search for meaning was included as an additional moderating variable. State anxiety was measured as the dependent variable in both studies. Results of Study 1 showed that, while the benevolent creative task could buffer anxiety in the mortality salience condition, the malevolent creative task did not have the same effect. Furthermore, there was a significant interaction between mortality salience, type of creative task, and search for meaning in life on anxiety. In Study 2, the buffering function of benevolent creativity was more intense for participants with a higher level of search for meaning. Together, these findings reveal the influence of different types of creative tasks on individual anxiety levels under death priming conditions and the moderating effect of search for meaning in this relationship. Further, they suggest the need to focus on the role of creativity in terror management. (shrink)

To Help or Not to Help? The Good Samaritan Effect and the Love of Money on Helping Behavior.Thomas Li-Ping Tang, Toto Sutarso, Grace Mei-Tzu Wu Davis, Dariusz Dolinski, Abdul Hamid Safwat Ibrahim & Sharon Lynn Wagner - 2008 - Journal of Business Ethics 82 (4):865-887.
This research tests a model of employee helping behavior (a component of Organizational Citizenship Behavior, OCB) that involves a direct path (Intrinsic MotivesHelping Behavior, the Good (...) Samaritan Effect) and an indirect path (the Love of MoneyExtrinsic MotivesHelping Behavior). Results for the full sample supported the Good Samaritan Effect. Further, the love of money was positively related to extrinsic motives that were negatively related with helping behavior. We tested the model across four cultures (the USA., Taiwan, Poland, and Egypt). The Good Samaritan Effect was significant for all four countries. For the indirect path, the first part was significant for all countries, except Egypt, whereas the second part was significant for Poland only. For Poland, the indirect path was significant and positive. The love of money may cause one to help in one culture (Poland) but not to help in others. Results were discussed in the light of ethical decision making. (shrink)

Effectively Detecting Communities by Adjusting Initial Structure Via Cores.Mei Chen, Zhichong Yang, Xiaofang Wen, Mingwei Leng, Mei Zhang & Ming Li - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-20.
Community detection is helpful to understand useful information in real-world networks by uncovering their natural structures. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective community (...)detection algorithm, called ACC, which needs no heuristic search but has near-linear time complexity. ACC defines a novel similarity which is different from most common similarity definitions by considering not only common neighbors of two adjacent nodes but also their mutual exclusive degree. According to this similarity, ACC groups nodes together to obtain the initial community structure in the first step. In the second step, ACC adjusts the initial community structure according to cores discovered through a new local density which is defined as the influence of a node on its neighbors. The third step expands communities to yield the final community structure. To comprehensively demonstrate the performance of ACC, we compare it with seven representative state-of-the-art community detection algorithms, on small size networks with ground-truth community structures and relatively big-size networks without ground-truth community structures. Experimental results show that ACC outperforms the seven compared algorithms in most cases. (shrink)

Stability Analysis and Chaos Control of Recycling Price Game Model for Manufacturers and Retailers.Ting Li, Dongyun Yan & Xiaogang Ma - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-13.
With application of nonlinear theory, this paper makes study on the long-term competition in a recycling price game model by manufacturers and retailers. The paper makes (...)analysis on the local stability of the Nash equilibrium point and gives the corresponding stable region. It has been found that the stability of the whole system would be significantly impacted by the following factors which include adjustment speed of the recycling price, the proportion of recycled products by channels, the sensitivity of consumers for the recycling price, and the price cross-elasticity between two channels. By means of the simulation technology, the complexity of the recycling price in the system in the long-term competition has been demonstrated. Owing to the change of parameters, bifurcation, chaos, and other phenomena would appear in the system. When the system is becoming chaotic, the profit of the whole system decreased. All these show that the operational efficiency for the whole system will be impaired by the chaos. Effective chaotic control of the system will be realized by the use of the parameter adaptation method. (shrink)
