    Does Gender Influence Managers’ Ethics? A Cross‐Cultural Analysis.Chung‐wen Chen, Kristine Velasquez Tuliao, John B. Cullen & Yi‐Ying Chang - 2016 - Business Ethics: A European Review 25 (4):345-362.
The relationship between gender and ethics has been extensively researched. However, previous studies have assumed that the gender–ethics association is constant; hence, scholars have seldom investigated factors potentially affecting the gender–ethics association. Thus, using managers as the research target, this study examined the relationship between gender and ethics and analyzed the moderating effect of cultural values on the gender–ethics association. The results showed that, compared with female managers, their male counterparts are more willing to justify business-related unethical behaviors such as (...)

Supervisors’ Value Orientations and Ethics: A Cross-National Analysis.Chung-wen Chen, Hsiu-Huei Yu, Kristine Velasquez Tuliao, Aditya Simha & Yi-Ying Chang - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-14.
In this study, we used the framework of institutional anomie theory The future of anomie theory, Northeastern University Press, Boston, 1997) to examine the relationship between supervisors’ ethics and their personal value orientation, including achievement and pecuniary materialism. We further investigated whether these individual-level associations were moderated by societal factors consisting of income inequality, government efficiency, foreign competition, and technological advancement. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to analyze data of 16,464 supervisors from 42 nations obtained from the 2010–2014 wave of (...)

  6. Lao-Tzu's Treatise on the Response of the Tao: A Contemporary Translation of the Most Popular Taoist Book in China.Li Ying-Chang - 2010 - Yale University Press.
Considered by many Taoists and non-Taoists alike to be an essential guide to living, Lao-tzu's Treatise on the Response of the Tao was written by the twelfth-century sage Le Ying-chang. Presenting foundational teachings and practices of the Action and Karma school of Taoism, it is replete with folk stories illustrating the teachings and an introductory essay that discusses the more esoteric meaning of the passages. Told with clarity and depth, these seminal Taoist teachings offer guidance on leading a balanced (...)

Teacher Views About Constructivist Instruction and Personal Epistemology: A National Study in Taiwan.Fang‐Ying Yang, Chun‐Yuan Chang & Ying‐Shou Hsu - 2008 - Educational Studies 34 (5):527-542.
This study investigated the views about constructivist instruction and personal epistemology of the secondary earth science teachers in Taiwan. Participants were assessed through a paper‐and‐pencil survey and a Learning environment preference questionnaire designed to explore personal epistemology. On a five‐point Likert scale, teachers, on average, showed a neutral agreement on constructivist instruction. The content analysis suggested that teachers held alternative views about the nature of the constructivist instruction. LEP scores were found to be statistically associated with gender, education, current teaching (...)

The Heterogeneous Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility Activities That Target Different Stakeholders.Kiyoung Chang, Incheol Kim & Ying Li - 2014 - Journal of Business Ethics 125 (2):1-24.
We aggregate different dimensions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities following the stakeholder framework proposed in Clarkson (Acad Manag Rev 20(1), 92–117, 1995) and present consistent evidence that CSR strengths targeting different stakeholders have their unique impact on firm risk and financial performance. Institutional CSR activities that target secondary stakeholders are negatively associated with firm risk, measured by total risk and systematic risk. Technical CSR that target primary stakeholders are positively associated with firm financial performance, measured by Tobin’s Q, ROA, (...)

Is There Informational Value in Corporate Giving?Kiyoung Chang, Hoje Jo & Ying Li - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 151 (2):473-496.
In this article, we propose that giving in cash and non-cash differ in their relation with the giving firm’s future corporate financial performance and only cash giving is associated with future CFP. Using a novel dataset from ASSET4 that differentiates corporate giving over a sample period of 2002–2012, we examine three competing hypotheses: agency cost hypothesis that cash giving reflects agency cost and destroys value for shareholders, investment hypothesis that cash giving is an investment by management that aims for better (...)

In this paper we give a full account of the work of William Thomson on absolute temperature, which to this day provides the theoretical underpinnings for the most rigorous measurements of temperature. When Thomson fashioned his concepts of ‘absolute’ temperature, his main concern was to make the definition of temperature independent of the properties of particular thermometric substances . He tried out a succession of definitions based on the thermodynamics of ideal heat engines; most notably, in 1854 he gave the (...)

    A Heterogeneous Multiattribute Group Decision-Making Method Based on Intuitionistic Triangular Fuzzy Information.Jun Xu, Jiu-Ying Dong, Shu-Ping Wan, De-Yan Yang & Yi-Feng Zeng - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-18.
How to aggregate decision information in heterogeneous multiattribute group decision making is vital. The aim of this paper is to develop an approach to aggregating decision data into intuitionistic triangular fuzzy numbers for heterogeneous MAGDM problems with real numbers, interval numbers, triangular fuzzy numbers, trapezoidal fuzzy numbers, and triangular intuitionistic fuzzy number. Using the relative closeness of technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution and geometry entropy method, we first present a general approach to aggregating heterogeneous information into (...)

The Impact of Operational Diversity on Corporate Philanthropy: An Empirical Study of U.S. Companies. [REVIEW]Jean D. Kabongo, Kiyoung Chang & Ying Li - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 116 (1):49-65.
This paper investigates the impact of diversity on corporate philanthropy. Compared to previous studies that have considered the influence of board diversity and CEO gender on corporate philanthropy, this study introduces the concept of operational diversity, which is the implementation of diversity programs at management, employee, and supply chain levels, and further, it explains why operational diversity influences corporate philanthropy, by using the premises of resource dependence theory. Second, this study also investigates the influence of board diversity on corporate philanthropy. (...)

Metaphysical Foundations of Knowledge and Ethics in Chinese and European Philosophy.Guo Yi, Chung-Ying Cheng, Asuman Lätzer-Lasar, Hans-Georg Moeller, Arran Gare, Sasa Josifovic, Paul Cobben, Günter Zöller, Christian Krijnen, Tilman Borsche, Ralph Weber & Richard N. Stichler (eds.) - 2013 - Paderborn: Wilhelm Fink.
In the history of Chinese and European philosophy, metaphysics has played an outstanding role: it is a theoretical framework which provides the basis for a philosophical understanding of the world and the self. A theory of the self is well integrated in a metaphysical understanding of the totality of nature as a dynamic process of continuous changes. According to this view, the purpose of existence can be conceived of as the development and realization of the full potential given to the (...)

A Hybrid Fuzzy Wavelet Neural Network Model with Self-Adapted Fuzzy C-Means Clustering and Genetic Algorithm for Water Quality Prediction in Rivers.Mingzhi Huang, Hongbin di TianLiu, Chao Zhang, Xiaohui Yi, Jiannan Cai, Jujun Ruan, Tao Zhang, Shaofei Kong & Guangguo Ying - 2018 - Complexity 2018:1-11.
Water quality prediction is the basis of water environmental planning, evaluation, and management. In this work, a novel intelligent prediction model based on the fuzzy wavelet neural network including the neural network, the fuzzy logic, the wavelet transform, and the genetic algorithm was proposed to simulate the nonlinearity of water quality parameters and water quality predictions. A self-adapted fuzzy c-means clustering was used to determine the number of fuzzy rules. A hybrid learning algorithm based on a genetic algorithm and gradient (...)

Exploring the Effects of Anticounterfeiting Strategies on Customer Values and Loyalty.Wen-Ruey Lee, Sheng-Hsiung Chang, Yi-Ching Hsieh & Hung-Chang Chiu - 2009 - Ethics and Behavior 19 (5):403-413.
Product counterfeiting, a serious problem throughout the world, is particularly challenging for luxury brands, which often have simple designs and a value that depends largely on buyers' perceptions. This study incorporates the concept of customer value into an investigation of the anticounterfeiting strategies. Both hedonic and utilitarian values positively influence customer loyalty toward luxury brands. As a means to strengthen customer values, legal and product strategies positively influence customers' hedonic value, whereas communication and product strategies positively influence their utilitarian value. Does Raising Value Co-Creation Increase All Customers’ Happiness?Yi-Ching Hsieh, Hung-Chang Chiu, Yun-Chia Tang & Wei-Yun Lin - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 152 (4):1053-1067.
Happiness, defined as a state of well-being and contentment, is a central human goal. Despite advances in customer behavior research related to value co-creation, the link between customer happiness and these behaviors remains unclear. This study therefore examines customers’ in-role participation behavior and extra-role citizenship behavior to determine their influence on customers’ happiness. Customer participation and citizenship behaviors relate positively to customers’ perceptions of both service performance and their contributions to others’ welfare. In addition, collectivism moderates the relationship between perceived (...)
