Geologic Characterization of a Lower Cambrian Marine Shale: Implications for Shale Gas Potential in Northwestern Hunan, South China.Zhenghui Xiao, Jisong Liu, Jingqiang Tan, Rongfeng Yang, Jason Hilton, Ping Zhou, Zhaohui Wang & Yunjiang Cao - 2018 - Interpretation: SEG 6 (3):T635-T647.
We have investigated the geologic features of the lower Cambrian-aged Niutitang Shale in the northwestern Hunan province of South China. Our results indicate that the Niutitang Shale has abundant and highly mature algal kerogen with total organic carbon content ranging from 0.6% to 18.2%. The equivalent vitrinite reflectance value is between 2.5% and 4.3%. Mineral constituents are dominated by quartz and clay. The average quartz content is much higher than that of clay minerals, and this suggests a high brittleness index. (...)

Quantitative Identification of Coal Texture Using the Support Vector Machine with Geophysical Logging Data: A Case Study Using Medium-Rank Coal From the Panjiang, Guizhou, China.Zhenghui Xiao, Wei Jiang, Bin Sun, Yunjiang Cao, Lei Jiang, Taotao Cao, Qing Yang, Cailun Huang, Xiansheng Yang & Xiangkuan Huang - 2020 - Interpretation 8 (4):T753-T762.
Coal texture is important for predicting coal seam permeability and selecting favorable blocks for coalbed methane exploration. Drilled cores and mining seam observations are the most direct and effective methods of identifying coal texture; however, they are expensive and cannot be used in unexplored coal seams. Geophysical logging has become a common method of coal texture identification, particularly during the CBM mining stage. However, quantitative methods for identifying coal texture based on geophysical logging data require further study. The support vector (...)

Yang Zhu Research in the Twentieth Century: With a Focus on Guo Moruo, Meng Wentong, Hou Wailu, and Liu Zehua.Feng Cao - 2019 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 50 (3-4):144-163.
Cao Feng describes two types of twentieth-century Yang Zhu-related scholarship. “Academic history” is represented by Meng Wentong and Guo Moruo; it focused on textual analysis and largely expanded the network of lineages related to Yang Zhu, reaching into Huang-Lao scholarship. “Intellectual history” since 1949 is represented by Hou Wailu and Liu Zehua. It portrays Yang Zhu’s thought system in terms of Marxist and post-Marxist ideology, respectively. Cao warns against the ideological coloring of the latter type and admires the scholarly attitude (...)

    A Bertrand Duopoly Game with Long-Memory Effects.Baogui Xin, Fangrui Cao, Wei Peng & Abdelalim A. Elsadany - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-7.
Reconsidering the Bertrand duopoly game based on the concept of long short-term memory, we construct a fractional-order Bertrand duopoly game by extending the integer-order game to its corresponding fractional-order form. We build such a Bertrand duopoly game, in which both players can make their decisions with long-memory effects. Then, we investigate its Nash equilibria, local stability, and numerical solutions. Using the bifurcation diagram, the phase portrait, time series, and the 0-1 test for chaos, we numerically validate these results and illustrate (...)

Our understanding of communication and its evolution has advanced significantly through the study of simple models involving interacting senders and receivers of signals. Many theorists have thought that the resources of mathematical information theory are all that are needed to capture the meaning or content that is being communicated in these systems. However, the way theorists routinely talk about the models implicitly draws on a conception of content that is richer than bare informational content, especially in contexts where false content (...)

  6. A Teleosemantic Approach to Information in the Brain.Rosa Cao - 2012 - Biology and Philosophy 27 (1):49-71.
The brain is often taken to be a paradigmatic example of a signaling system with semantic and representational properties, in which neurons are senders and receivers of information carried in action potentials. A closer look at this picture shows that it is not as appealing as it might initially seem in explaining the function of the brain. Working from several sender-receiver models within the teleosemantic framework, I will first argue that two requirements must be met for a system to support (...)

    On Axiomatizations of Public Announcement Logic.Yanjing Wang & Qinxiang Cao - 2013 - Synthese 190 (S1).
In the literature, different axiomatizations of Public Announcement Logic (PAL) have been proposed. Most of these axiomatizations share a “core set” of the so-called “reduction axioms”. In this paper, by designing non-standard Kripke semantics for the language of PAL, we show that the proof system based on this core set of axioms does not completely axiomatize PAL without additional axioms and rules. In fact, many of the intuitive axioms and rules we took for granted could not be derived from the (...)

New Labels for Old Ideas: Predictive Processing and the Interpretation of Neural Signals.Rosa Cao - 2020 - Review of Philosophy and Psychology 11 (3):517-546.
Philosophical proponents of predictive processing cast the novelty of predictive models of perception in terms of differences in the functional role and information content of neural signals. However, they fail to provide constraints on how the crucial semantic mapping from signals to their informational contents is determined. Beyond a novel interpretative gloss on neural signals, they have little new to say about the causal structure of the system, or even what statistical information is carried by the signals. That means that (...)

What are the functional units of the brain? If the function of the brain is to process information-carrying signals, then the functional units will be the senders and receivers of those signals. Neurons have been the default candidate, with action potentials as the signals. But there are alternatives: synapses fit the action potential picture more cleanly, and glial activities (e.g., in astrocytes) might also be characterized as signaling. Are synapses or nonneuronal cells better candidates to play the role of functional (...)

Out Lag Synchronization of Fractional Order Delayed Complex Networks with Coupling Delay Via Pinning Control.Weiwei Zhang, Jinde Cao, Dingyuan Chen & Ahmed Alsaedi - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-7.
This paper discusses the out lag synchronization of fractional order complex networks including both internal delay and coupling delay and with the employment of pinning control scheme. Using comparison theorem and constructing the auxiliary function, several synchronization criterions by linear feedback pinning control are presented. The model and the obtained results in this work are more general than the previous works. Correctness and effectiveness of the theoretical results are validated through numerical simulations.

Retraction: The “Other Face” of Research Collaboration?Li Tang, Guangyuan Hu, Yang Sui, Yuhan Yang & Cong Cao - 2020 - Science and Engineering Ethics 26 (3):1681-1708.
The last two decades have witnessed the rising prevalence of both co-publishing and retraction. Focusing on research collaboration, this paper utilizes a unique dataset to investigate factors contributing to retraction probability and elapsed time between publication and retraction. Data analysis reveals that the majority of retracted papers are multi-authored and that repeat offenders are collaboration prone. Yet, all things being equal, collaboration, in and of itself, does not increase the likelihood of producing flawed or fraudulent research, at least in the (...)

Ethics education has become essential in modern engineering. Ethics education in engineering has been increasingly implemented worldwide. It can improve ethical behaviors in technology and engineering design under the guidance of the philosophy of technology. Hence, this study aims to compare China-US engineering ethics education in Sino-Western philosophies of technology by using literature studies, online surveys, observational researches, textual analyses, and comparative methods. In my original theoretical framework and model of input and output for education, six primary variables emerge in (...)

Experiment Investigation and Numerical Simulation of Snowdrift on a Typical Large-Span Retractable Roof.Zhenggang Cao, Mengmeng Liu & Pengcheng Wu - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-14.
Retractable roofs are commonly used in designing large-span stadiums because of their versatility. However, retractable roofs are subject to sudden changes in shape, and thus, factors in addition to those considered for conventional roofs need to be taken into account. In particular, retractable roofs are considerably more sensitive to snow loads because their shapes are complex, and snowdrift on roofs may lead to difficulties for the operating of retractable roofs. To investigate the distribution of snow on retractable roofs, this study (...)

New Stabilization Results for Semi-Markov Chaotic Systems with Fuzzy Sampled-Data Control.Tao Wu, Jinde Cao, Lianglin Xiong & Haiyang Zhang - 2019 - Complexity 2019:1-15.
This paper investigates the problem of stabilization for semi-Markov chaotic systems with fuzzy sampled-data controllers, in which the semi-Markov jump has generally uncertain transition rates. The exponential stability condition is firstly obtained by the following two main techniques: To make full use of the information about the actual sampling pattern, a novel augmented input-delay-dependent Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional is firstly introduced. Meanwhile, a new zero-value equation is established to increase the combinations of component vectors of the resulting vector. The corresponding fuzzy sampled-data (...)

China does not seem to believe the existence of universally acknowledged values in science and fails to promote the observation of such values that also should be applied to every member of the scientific community and at all times. Or, there is a separation between the practice of science in China and the values represented by modern science. In this context, science, including the pursuit of the Nobel Prize, is more a pragmatic means to achieve the end of the political (...)

The antifloating property of underground structures in areas with high underground water levels is a key design aspect. Evaluating the buoyancy forces acting on underground structures is complicated, particularly in the presence of confined water beneath the structures. Herein, the effects of the permeability coefficient of layered soil, hydraulic gradient, and embedment depth of the aquiclude on the buoyancy force acting on underground structures are investigated through three model tests: calibration of the test system, buoyancy force acting on a structure (...)

A fuzzy predictive fault-tolerant control scheme is proposed for a wide class of discrete-time nonlinear systems with uncertainties, interval time-varying delays, and partial actuator failures as well as unknown disturbances, in which the main opinions focus on the relevant theory of FPFTC based on Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model description of these systems. The T-S fuzzy model represents the discrete-time nonlinear system in the form of the discrete uncertain time-varying delay state space, which is firstly constructed by a set of local linear (...)

This study examines the impact of mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility reporting on firms’ financial reporting quality using a quasi-natural experiment in China that mandates a subset of firms to report their CSR activities starting in 2008. We find that mandatory CSR disclosure firms constrain earnings management after the policy. The result is robust to a battery of sensitivity tests and more prominent for firms with lower analyst coverage. Further analyses reveal that upward earnings management by mandatory disclosure firms is more (...)

Social capital can serve as informal governance in weak investor-protection regimes. Using hand-collected data on entrepreneurs’ political connections and firm ownership, we construct several original measures of social capital and examine their effect on the performance of entrepreneurial firms in China after their initial public offerings. Political connections or a high percentage of external investors tend to enhance firm performance, but intragroup related-party transactions commonly lead to performance decline. These forms of social capital have a strong influence on the performance (...)

The Casimir Effect and the Interpretation of the Vacuum.S. E. Rugh, H. Zinkernagel & T. Y. Cao - 1999 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part B: Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics 30 (1):111-139.
The Casimir force between two neutral metallic plates is often considered conclusive evidence for the reality of electromagnetic zero-point fluctuations in ‘empty space’. However, it is not well known that the Casimir force can be derived from many different points of view. The purpose of this note is to supply a conceptually oriented introduction to a representative set of these different interpretations. The different accounts suggest that the Casimir effect reveals nothing conclusive about the nature of the vacuum.
