    Dharmamegha-Samādhi in the Yogasūtras of Patañjali: A Critique.T. S. Rukmani - 2007 - Philosophy East and West 57 (2):131 - 139.
The concept of dharmamegha-samādhi that occurs in Patañjali's Yogasutras, in the path to kaivalya, has not been easy to comprehend. Scholars working in the field of Yoga have explained the concept in many different ways. This essay tries to reach an understanding of dharmamegha-samādhi based on a careful reading of the Yogastitras along with Vyāsa's commentary on it and the later well-known commentaries on Vyāsa's own commentary such as the Tattvavaisāradī, the Yogavārttika, and so on. Whether dharmamegha-samādhi is in any (...)

This book has no equal in the literature that deals with the true philosophy and not with mental inventions, of no use to the true seeker. The subject matter is considered from all points of view, Eastern and Western alike. It is as attainable in a Manhattan apartment as in an Indian Ashram. The book can be strongly recommended to all those who want to find the true sense and fulfillment of their lives and to depart into the other world (...)

The prajñāpāramitā in Relation to the Three Samādhis.Yoke Meei Choong - 2016 - Journal of Indian Philosophy 44 (4):727-756.
The idea that insight is by nature incompatible with concentration has been a long-term focus of scholarly discussion regarding the interpretation of some sūtra passages that could suggest the occurrence of insight within concentration. In the Prajñāpāramitā literature, the set of three samādhis is identified with insight, the prajñāpāramitā. Some scholars identify the experience of emptiness in these samādhis with a state of concentration, very likely the absorption of extinction. I highlight elsewhere a passage in the Prajñāpāramitā in which preceding (...)

Tantra of the yoga sutras: essential wisdom for living with awareness and grace.Alan Finger - 2018 - Boulder: Shambhala. Edited by Wendy Newton.
The Yoga Sutras are Patanjali's classic on how to experience oneness (Samadhi) within yoga practice. Many serious yoga students want to bring the wisdom of the Sutras to their practice, but often find the text impenetrable and difficult to relate to. The Tantra of the Yoga Sutras remedies this by offering an interpretation that is uniquely relatable, teachable, and accessible. Yogi and tantric master Alan Finger shows contemporary practitioners and students that Samadhi is not something that we strive for in (...)

Some Remarks on the Genesis of Central Yogācāra-Vijñānavāda Concepts.Lambert Schmithausen - 2018 - Journal of Indian Philosophy 46 (2):263-281.
The present paper is a kind of selective summary of my book The Genesis of Yogācāra-Vijñānavāda. [1.–2.] It deals with questions of origin and early development of three basic concepts of this school, viz., the ‘idealist’ thesis that the whole world is mind only or manifestation only, the assumption of a subliminal layer of the mind, and the analysis of phenomena in terms of the “Three Natures”. [3.] It has been asserted that these three basic concepts are logically inseparable and (...)

    Some remarks on the yogasūtra.Marcus Sacrini A. Ferraz - 2009 - Philosophy East and West 59 (3):pp. 249-262.
In this article are discussed some problems raised by T. S. Rukmani regarding the Yogasūtra. According to Rukmani, yoga is not a coherent logical system. After stating the general goals of the yoga system, interpretations of some passages of the Yogasūtra are formulated, and the defense is given that one must at least acknowledge the necessity of more exegetical investigation before judging the logical incoherence of the text. Finally, the problematic doctrine of living liberation in Yogasūtra is exposed.

Awakening through the nine bodies: explorations in consciousness for mindfulness meditation and yoga practitioners.Phillip Moffitt - 2018 - Berkeley, California: North Atlantic Books.
Based on meditation practices Phillip Moffitt learned twenty years ago from Himalayan yoga master Sri Swami Balyogi Premvarni, this beautifully illustrated book is a guide to exploring the nature of mind and gaining a better understanding of experiences that arise during meditation. The Nine Bodies teachings map out a journey that starts with consciousness that arises in the physical body and is directly observable, and then travels through ever more subtle levels of consciousness to that which is not manifest and (...)

The essential Yoga sutra: ancient wisdom for your yoga.Michael Roach - 2005 - New York: Three Leaves Press, Doubleday. Edited by Christie McNally & Patañjali.
The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali is a classic Sanskrit treatise consisting of 195 “threads,” or aphorisms, describing the process of liberation through yoga. Although little is known about Patanjali (most scholars estimate that he lived in India circa 200–300 b.c.), his writings have long been recognized as a vital contribution to the philosophy and practice of yoga. This new, expert translation of the original Sanskrit text of Patanjali’s best-known work presents his seminal ideas and methods in accessible, plain-language English. Patanjali (...)

Mental Freedom and Freedom of the Loving Heart: Free Will and Buddhist Meditation.Karin L. Meyers - 2020 - Zygon 55 (2):519-539.
In Buddhism, Meditation and Free Will: A Theory of Mental Freedom , Rick Repetti explains how the dynamics of Buddhist meditation can result in a kind of metacognition and metavolitional control that exceeds what is required for free will and defeats the most powerful forms of free will skepticism. This article argues that although the Buddhist path requires and enhances the kind of mental and volitional control Repetti describes, the central dynamic of the path and meditation is better understood as (...)

Dharmamegha in yoga and yogācāra: the revision of a superlative metaphor.Karen O’Brien-Kop - 2020 - Journal of Indian Philosophy 48 (4):605-635.
The Pātañjalayogaśāstra concludes with a description of the pinnacle of yoga practice: a state of samādhi called dharmamegha, cloud of dharma. Yet despite the structural importance of dharmamegha in the soteriology of Pātañjala yoga, the śāstra itself does not say much about this term. Where we do find dharmamegha discussed, however, is in Buddhist yogācāra, and more broadly in early Mahāyāna soteriology, where it represents the apex of attainment and the superlative statehood of a bodhisattva. Given the relative paucity of (...)

The Concept of Guarding the One from the Zhuangzi 《莊子》 to Early Chan Buddhism.Wen Zhao - 2023 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 50 (2):126-140.
This paper traces the conception of “guarding the One” (shou yi 守一), an equivalent to “one-practice samādhi” from the East Mountain Teaching (dong shan fa men 東山法門) in early Chan Buddhism, back to the Zhuangzi《莊子》. “Guarding the One” and “nurturing the shen” (yang shen 養神) appear frequently in the context of Daoist spiritual training for longevity. In early medieval Chinese Buddhism, with the influence of the discourse of Daoist spiritual training and the karma theory from India, the concept of shen (...)

In this paper I continue an enterprise begun in earlier work in which I attempt to naturalize into a western philosophical context concepts that derive from the practice of Buddhist meditation. In particular I shall try to make use of the notion of samādhi and vipassanā or insight. I should stress that I make no attempt at a scholarly explication of these terms but try rather to establish a use for them through reflection on experience, and by making a connection (...)
