롤즈(John Rawls)는 『정의론』(1971/1999a)에서 자존감의 사회적 토대가 가장 중요한 기본 재화이며, 자존감 없이는 어떤 것도 할 만한 가치가 없다고 단언한다. 이러한 강조에도 불구하고, 롤즈는 『정의론』에서 태도로서의 자존감과 사회적 기본 재화인 자존감의 사회적 토대를 구분하지 못했을 뿐만 아니라, 자존감의 사회적 기본 재화의 내용이 무엇인지 그리고 어떻게 분배해야 하는지도 제시하지 않았다. 롤즈의 이러한 혼동과 설명 부재로 인해 자존감의 사회적토대의 내용이 무엇인지, 그리고 어떻게 분배해야 하는지에 대한 논란이 제기된다. 이러한 논란은 롤즈 정의론의 일관성과 정합성을 훼손할 뿐만 아니라, 롤즈 정의론을 체계적으로 이해하지 못하게 하는 걸림돌이 된다. 따라서 본 논문은 롤즈 『정의론』에서 가장 중요한 사회적 기본 재화로 간주되는 자존감의 사회적 토대의 구체적인 내용이 무엇인지, 그리고 이러한 기본 재화들을 어떻게 분배해야 하는지를 규명하고자 한다. 본 논문은 『정의론』에서 자존감의 사회적 토대의 내용에는, 롤즈가 제시한 기존의 사회적 기본 재화들과 자존감 확보를 위해 필요한 새로운 사회적 기본 재화가 모두 포함된다고 주장한다. 또한, 이러한 자존감의 사회적 토대의 내용에 해당하는 재화들은 정의의 두 원칙의 협업을 통해 분배된다고 주장한다. 이러한 주장과 규명은 롤즈 『정의론』을 정합적이고 체계적으로 이해하도록 돕는다는 장점을 가지지만, 자존감의 사회적 토대로 인해 롤즈 정의론이 가졌던 명료함과 단순함의 미덕이 훼손된다는 문제점도 보여준다.

In John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice (1971/1999a), Rawls does not explain what the social bases of self-respect are and how they can be distributed in his Two Principles. Additionally, in A Theory of Justice, Rawls does not distinguish self-respect, as an attitude, from the social bases of self-respect, as social primary goods. For these reasons, many have been confused and have debated about what the social bases of self-respect are. This is especially the case when discussing whether material goods belong to these social bases of self-respect, and whether Rawls’s Two Principles can distribute them. The purpose of this paper is to explore what the social bases of self-respect are and how they can be distributed using Rawls’s Two Principles. I argue that the social bases of self-respect include all Rawls’s primary goods, as well as contemporary primary goods contributing to security and cultivation of self-respect. I also argue that Rawls’s Two Principles distribute the social bases of self-respect. For example, the first principle—the equal liberty principle—distributes basic liberties for self-respect, and the second principle—the difference principle—guarantees a social minimum for income and wealth relating to self-respect per the spirit of fraternity. Rawls’s second principle also creates an incentive for efficiency. These arguments respond to critiques concerning the social bases of self-respect and they allow for a coherent and consistent understanding of Rawls’s theory of justice. Still, my explanation counters the reputation that Rawls’s theory of justice has the merit of clarity and simplicity in explaining its sophisticated arguments.
