윤리적 직관주의는 20세기 후반의 기간 동안 격렬한 논쟁이 이루어진 도덕 인식론이다. 예를 들면, 매키는 직관주의를‘우리의 도덕적 사유의 희화화’라고 불렀고, 맥도웰은 그것을 ‘유령 인식론’이라고 불렀다. 윤리적 직관의 해명을 시도할 때, 프리차드는‘도덕적 사유작용’이라는 표현을 사용한다. 그는 그것을‘도덕과 무관한 사유작용’인 논증 제시작용과 대비시킨다. 도덕적 사유작용은 예컨대 의무에 대한 즉각적 혹은 직접적 인식이다. 이러한 표현들이 가진 문제는 그 표현들이 매우 분명하지 않아서 직관주의가 실제로 유령 인식론이 아니냐는 의심을 불러올 수 있다는 것이다. 주지하다시피 직관주의는 20세기 내내 수많은 비판을 겪어왔다. 그리고 특정한 기간 동안 직관주의는 평판이 좋지 않았기 때문에 많은 철학자들이 기회가 있을 적마다 자신은 직관주의자가 아니라고 공표하곤 하였다. 하지만 최근에 와서 직관주의는 부활을 체험하고 있다.
본 연구의 목적은 윤리적 직관주의의 신뢰성을 확인하는 데 있다. 이러한 작업을 위하여 본 연구에서는 먼저 직관 논쟁을 통한‘직관’의 신뢰성 여부에 대한 객관적 검토를 시행할 것이다. 그리고 윤리적 직관주의에 대한 전통적인 비판의 타당성 여부를 검토할 것이다. 그리고 마지막으로 윤리적 직관주의의 새로운 형태인 정서적 직관주의의 근본 입장 및 그에 대한 신경 윤리학과 사회 심리학의 도전에 대한 객관적 고찰을 통하여 정서적 직관주의의 타당성을 입증하고 나아가서 윤리적 직관주의의 신뢰성을 확인할 것이다.

Ethical intuitionism was an extremely contested moral epistemology during the second half of 20th century. For example, J.L. Mackie called intuitionism a ‘travesty of our moral thinking’ and John McDowell referred to it as a ‘bogus epistemology’. When trying to elucidate ethical intuitions, Prichard uses the formulation ‘an act of moral thinking’. He contrasts it with an act of providing an argument, which he explicitly calls a ‘process of non-moral thinking’. Instead, an ‘act of moral thinking’ is an ‘immediate or direct apprehension’ of an obligation, for example. The problem with these formulations is that they are not very illuminating, which might invite the suspicion that intuitionism is indeed a ‘bogus epistemology’.
As is well known, throughout the 20th century, intuitionism has undergone much criticism. At a certain stage, intuitionism became so unpopular that many philosophers took every opportunity to declare that they were not intuitionists. Only recently has intuitionism experienced a revival.
The purpose of this study is to confirm the reliability of ethical intuitionism. For this work, this study will first carry out an objective examination of the credibility of ‘intuition’ based on the intuition debates. And the validity of the traditional critique of ethical intuitionism will be examined. And finally, through an objective examination of the fundamental position of affectual intuitionism and the challenges of neuroethics and social psychology, it will prove the validity of affectual intuitionism, and furthemore, confirm the reliability of ethical intuitionism.
