Additional information

These lines are from Hölderlin, SÄmtliche Werke, ed. N.V. Hellingrath, IV, 543. Tr. J. Kockelmans.

This essay was read at a memorial symposium in memory of Martin Heidegger at the April 1977 meetings of the American Philosophical Association in Chicago. Some of the themes of this essay are formulated in other essays in this number of “Man & World” and in other works of Michael Gelven, Harold Alderman and Nenos Georgopolous.

The quotations from Heidegger are offered as evidence that I respond to him. Since the quotations are in English, the references given are to English translations of Heidegger's works, where these are available, even though the translations quoted have often been modified.
