아벨라르두스는 아리스토텔레스의 『범주』편의 관계 범주(7장)을 주석하면서 전통적으로 해석상의 난점을 제공하던 몇몇 문제에 대해 하나의 체계적이고 일관된 해석을 제공한다. 이 해석을 소개하고 그것의 성취를 평가하는 것이 이 논문의 목표이다. 관계 범주의 첫 번째 정의와 두 번째 정의 사이의 관계 문제나, 관계범주의 일종으로 제시된 자세(positio)와 태세(situs) 범주 사이의 관계에 관한 문헌학적 난제들도 이런 틀에서 일관되게 해명되고 있다. 이런 문제들을 포함하여 다른 난제들도 이 틀에서 해결되고 있고, 무엇보다도 그의 유명론적 입장으로부터 관계자체와 관계항 사이의 선명한 개념적 구별, 관계 범주가 개체 차원과 종 차원에서 구별되는 방식에 대한 해명을 제공할 수 있고, 이것들은 중요한 철학사적 성취로 평가할 만하다는 것이 본 논문의 주장이다.

Abelard(1079-1142) provides a consistent and systematic solution to the problems which have been a source of confusion in understanding Aristotle’s Category of relation. This article tries to show the overall structure of this systematic solution and to evaluate its achievements. In his commentary on Aristotle’s Categories, Abelard explains some textual or interpretative difficulties concerning the relation between the first and the second definition of relatives, and addresses the problem of fundamental principle regulating the location of species and genera in the categories. Above all, this systematic solution comes from his nominalistic position, which shows clearly the distinction between relation itself and relatives, and the way how relations between individuals to be transferred to the relations between species. All these explanations are to be evaluated as one of the major achievements in the 12th century understanding of Aristotle’s Category of Relation.
