본 논문은 대승불교의 『대승기신론』과 레비나스의 『전체와 무한』이 깨달음의 과정에 대해 얼마나 생산적인 대화를 나눌 수 있는지를 보이고자 한다. 이런 목적 아래 『대승기신론』의 시각始覺 운동과 『전체와 무한』의 변론apologie 운동 중에서 전반부의 두 단계를 주제로 삼아, 첫째로는 불각不覺과 변론의 사투를, 둘째로는 상사각相似覺과 변론의 소송을 비교 분석한다. 이 대화는 쌍방에 호혜적인 것으로 밝혀질 만큼 생산적이다. 『대승기신론』 쪽에서는 지금껏 추상적 진공 상태에 머물러 있던 두 종류의 각覺이 드라마틱한 현상학적 구체성을 얻는다. 이는 『전체와 무한』에서 연출되는 변론 드라마와의 조응 덕분이다. 『전체와 무한』 쪽에서는 복잡다단한 사건들의 우여곡절로만 보였던 것이, 『대승기신론』의 논리적 도식과의 호응을 통해, 체계적 분절에 따른 논리적 운동인 것으로 밝혀진다. 또한, 『전체와 무한』의 변론 투쟁이 『정신현상학』의 인정 투쟁과 왜 그리고 어떻게 다른지를 조명할 수 있는 것도 『대승기신론』과의 대화가 제공한 조망권에 힘입은 바 크다.

This paper aims to show how productive a dialogue between Mahȃyȃna Buddhism’s The Awakening of the Faith in the Mahȃyȃna and Levinas’s Totality and infinity can be on the subject of the process of actualization of enlightenment. Focusing on first two stages of enlightenment in this process, it attempts an comparative analysis in detail, firstly between non-enlightenment(不覺) and struggle-unto-death (apology’s first step), and secondly between enlightenment-in-appearance (相似覺) and trial (apology’s second step). This dialogue is so productive that it is revealed mutually beneficial to its both sides. On the side of The Awakening of the Faith, its two kinds of concept of enlightenment, having remained up to now so abstract as to be void, obtain dramatic phenomenological concretion, by virtue of its correspondence with the apology drama unfolded in Totality and infinity. On the other hand, what seems to be simply a meandering of tangled incidents in Totality and infinity is revealed, in the light of the logical scheme offered by The Awakening of the Faith, to be a strict logical movement with an systematic articulation. And it is thanks to the communication with The Awakening of the Faith that it become possible to make a comprehensive survey of why and how the apology struggle in Totality and infinity differs from the recognition struggle in Phenomenology of Spirit.
