본 논문은 초간본 『속삼강행실도』가 간행될 당시의 기록에는 없었으나, 이후에 사적의 하나로 중간본에 편입되어 『동국신속삼강행실도』의 부록 『속삼강행실도』에 첨입(添入)된 「심원척간」에 주목한다. 그 사적(事蹟)의 주인공 이심원의 ‘공리적(公利的)’ 행동을 중심으로 한 탐색이다. 탐색의 방향 하나는, 조선 전반에 교화서로서의 역할을 하였던 『삼강행실도』「충신도」라는 범주이며 나아가 하나의 사적으로서 「심원척간」이다. 둘은, 사적의 주인공 이심원의 공리적(公利的) 행적이 지향한 ‘척간(斥姦)’에 주목하여 그 행동의 의미를 탐색한다. 조선의 도학이 정몽주-길재-김숙자-김종직-김굉필·정여창-조광조-이언적-이황으로 이어지는 도통의 계보에서, 종친인 이심원은 김종직과는 사승(師承)관계, 김굉필과 정여창과는 교우(交友)관계로 연결되는 지점에 있다. 그리고 임사홍을 사랑하는 조부인 보성군의 불효고변으로 간언(諫言)이 와전되며 평생 고초를 겪다가, 결국 임사홍의 간흉에 의해 갑자사화 때 두 아들과 죽음을 맞은 이심원이 「충신도」에 사적이 기록됨으로 그 충의(忠義)의 이름을 후세에 전해야 한다고 진언한 인물이 조광조이다. 종친이라는 한계 속에 도통의 계보에 이름을 올린 이들과 밀접한 관계를 가졌던 이심원은 잊힌 인물이 분명하다. 『삼강행실도』「충신도」에 이름을 올린 이들은 효자이자 충신으로 대의(大義)를 위해 나라의 존망 앞에 죽음을 불사한다. 이심원의 경우는 대의를 위하다가 불효라는 죄명을 얻게 되는 상황에 까지 이른다. 당시 성리학적 사유가 심화되는 과정 속에 선공(先公)을 선택하며 멸친(滅親)함으로 후사(後私)를 결행하게 된 이심원의 공리적(公利的) 행적은 후일 오랜 논의 과정을 거치고서야 결국 「충신도」에 기록되며 이름을 전한다. 의(義)를 보고도 행하지 않으면 용기가 없는 것이며, 용기가 있는 자는 두려워하지 않으며, 어진 자는 반드시 용기가 있다고 하였다. 이심원의 행적에 대한 논의가 지금의 우리에게 여전히 시사하는 바가 적지 않을 뿐만 아니라 아직도 충분히 유효한 텍스트임을 확인한다.
This study focuses on Simwon Cheokgan, which was not included in the first edition of Sok Samgang Heangsildo but later incorporated into the second edition as a record of a deed to Sok Samgang Heangsildo, which is the supplement to Dongguk Sinsok Samgang Haengsildo. This study is an exploration centering on the ‘public interests’ conduct of Lee Sim-won who is the protagonist of the deed. One of the directions of the exploration is the category set by Chungsindo of Samgang Heangsildo, which was used as the indoctrination book throughout the Joseon Dynasty, and further, Simwon Cheokgan as a record of the deed. Second, it focused on the ‘Repelling of the Treacherous’ aimed by the public interests deed of Lee Sim-won, the protagonist of the deed, to explore the meaning of the deed. In the genealogy of the moral philosophy of the Joseon Dynasty, which continued from Jeong Mong-joo to Gil Jae, Kim Sook-ja, Kim Jong-jik, Kim Goeng-pil, Jeong Yeo-chang, Jo Gwang-jo, Lee Eon-jeok, and Lee Hwang, Lee Sim-won who was a royal family member is in the position which is connected to Kim Jong-jik through teacher-pupil relationship and to Kim Goeng-pil and Jeong Yeo-chang, through peer relationship. Lee Sim-won suffered hardships for life after Prince Boseong, his grandfather who cherished Im Sa-hong, accused him of being unfilial, mispresenting his admonition and eventually faced death with his two sons during the Second Literati Purge in 1504 through Im Sa-hong’s wickedness. It was Jo Gwang-jo who proposed that his loyalty should be known to future generations by including his deed in Chungsindo. It is clear that Lee Sim-won, who had a close relationship with those who are included in the genealogy of the moral authority and had limitation for being a royal family member, is a forgotten figure. Those whose names are mentioned in Chungsindo of Samgang Heangsildo are filial sons and loyal subjects, and they willingly risked their lives for a greater cause during national crises. As for Lee Sim-won, he went as far as being convicted of the crime of unfilialness after following a greater cause. Lee Sim-won’s utilitarian deeds of taking care of public affairs and ignoring his parents while the Neo-Confucian reasoning became sophisticated at the time made him finally included in Chungsindo in latter days only after discussed for a long time. It is said, a person who does not carry out justice after seeing injustice has no courage, the person with courage is not afraid, and the virtuous person always has courage. This study confirms that the discussion on Lee Sim-won’s past still has many implications for us today and is a fully valid text so far.
