Abstract

History is almost always a cultural evolution that carries with it an evolution of human self-awareness. This evolution is perceptible in the transformations and progress that occur in techniques, sciences, and philosophy. Here we show the correlation between changes in anthropology, physics, and philosophy in the twentieth century and changes in society and culture in the twenty-first century.

Notes

  1. 1.

Note: All translations of Spanish book quotations into English are my own. The reference for Aristotle works are done with the canonical Latin reference system, even they are taken from the Spanish editions.

  2. 2.

The thesis was developed in Essai sur les données immédiates de la conscience (1889), Matière et mémoire (1896), and L’évolution créatrice (1907).

  3. 3.

One of the most recent experiments is to record the music that a patient is listening to on a device. A team led by Robert T. Knight and Ludovic Bellier from the University of California, Berkeley, has managed to reconstruct a song from the activity of neurons for the first time. The authors of the study analyzed the neuronal activity of 29 patients while they listened to a rock classic using electrocorticography, with electrodes implanted directly on the cerebral cortex. To achieve this, they created a decoding model of brain activity recorded with 2668 electrodes, of which 347 collected signals specifically related to music.

  4. 4.

On the persistence of life after heat death and the renewal of the universe, see Tipler (2005).
