왕필(王弼) 『주역(周易)』 해석의 특징에 관한 연구: 『주역약례(周易略例)』를 중심으로

왕필(王弼 226-249)의 『주역』 해석에 대한 선행연구에서 많은 연구자들이 왕필의 『주역』해석이 도가적이라고 말해왔다. 그가 『노자』의 철학에 입각하여 『주역』을 해석했다고 본 것이다. 이러한 기존의 견해에 반대하는 입장이 있다. 그들은『노자주』의 내용과 『주역주』의 내용이 구분될 수 있으며, 구분해서 보아야만 왕필의 철학을 제대로 파악할 수 있다고 주장한다. 그런데 이 입장을 취하는 두 명의 연구자들도 왕필의 『주역』 해석에 대해서는 완전히 다른 평가를 내린다. 한쪽은 왕필의 역학이 비정합성의 문제를 지닌다고 비판하고, 한쪽은 왕필의 역학이 정합적 체계를 이룬다고 평가한다. 왕필 『주역』 해석의 성격 규정과 관련하여 해명을 요구하는 문제들이 남아있는 것이다.
본고의 목적은 왕필의 『주역』 해석의 성격과 특징을 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위해 왕필의 『주역약례(周易略例)』를 검토 · 분석하는 방법을 사용하였다. 이 분석을 통해 본고는 왕필 『주역』 해석의 특징을 모두 네 가지로 정리 · 제시하였는데, 이 특징들은 ‘왕필의 『주역』 해석은 철저하게 십익에 의거하고 있다.’는 말로 요약될 수 있다. 그렇다면 왕필의 『주역』 해석은 도가적 해석으로 규정될 수 없을 것이며, 또 일관되게 십익에 의거하고 있다는 측면에서 정합성을 유지하는 체계로 간주될 수 있을 것이다.

Wang Pi(王弼, 226-249), a Chinese philosopher in the 3^rd century, wrote two books, the Commentary on the Laozi(老子注) and the Commentary on the Book of Changes(周易注). We can only refer these two short books to understand his philosophy. Wang Pi’s philosophy has been defined as Xuanxue(玄學) or Neo‐Daoism by the scholars whom studied the history of philosophy until now. Neo‐Daoism is rooted on the idea that the essence of the world is profound Dao(道).
If Wang Pi is seen as a Daoist philosopher, Daoism is deeply embedded in his translation on the Book of Changes. In deed, many scholars have perceived his translation as Taoistic, which implies that he translated the Book of Changes from the perspective of Laozi(老子). However, there are many opposite opinions to it. It is argued that the Commentary on the Laozi and the Commentary on the Book of Changes can be seperated, and it should be divided in order to fully understand his philosophy. In other words, the argument suggests that his philosophical system is divided into two parts. Therefore, Wang Pi has been criticized that his philosophy is not unified, but his translation is not coherent.
This article aims to bring in new perspectives on Wang Pi and his works. It proposes that Wang Pi’s philosophy and his translation are coherent. First, his translation of the Book of Changes will be analyzed, providing the original text of General Principles of the Book of Changes(周易略例). Also, selected cases from the Commentary on the Book of Changes will be given to support. Accordingly, Wang Pi’s translation is a coherent whole.
