이 글은「화엄경의 문학성 연구」를 불교문학의 측면에서 접근하여『화엄경』에 내재된 문학성을 분석한 논문이다. 본 논문의 내용은 크게 2가지 측면에서 접근하여 분석해보았다. 먼저 제Ⅱ장에서는 불교와 문학과의 관계 교섭에 대하여 불교문학에 대한 이해와 불교전승의 특징과 화엄경에 대한 이해 그리고 문학과 불교의 접점을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 그리고 제Ⅲ장에서는 불교문학의 측면에서 분석한『화엄경』을 ‘화엄’ 이름에 담긴 문학적 비유와 산문체로 본『화엄경』의 특성 그리고 화엄경에 담긴 문학의 4가지 관점을 토대로 분석해보았다. 이러한 분석을 통해 알 수 있는 사실은「화엄경의 문학성 연구-불교문학으로 분석한 화엄경」에 담긴 불교문학은 불교적 소재를 주제로 삼아 작가가 문학적으로 풀어 낸 것과 연관 지을 수 있는 개념이다. 따라서 문학과 불교를 교섭하면서 불교라는 종교적 성격과 영역을 해명하는 역할을 한다는 측면에서 중요하다는 것이다. 특히『화엄경』에는 삼독에 빠진 우리들의 내면을 정화하여 불성(佛性)을 회복하는데 도움이 되는 유익한 가르침이 담겨있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 불교문학으로 분석한『화엄경』에는 처음 바른 깨달음[正覺]을 이루신 교설이 다양한 문학적 장르와 비유, 형식 등으로 설해져 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 경전의 이름에 담긴 ‘화엄(華嚴)’이라는 비유적 표현은 모든 존재가 깨달음에 들어가기 위해서는 불교의 실천행인 보살도를 의보와 정보로 장엄해야 한다는 함의가 내재되어 있다. 이것이 바로 불교문학의 매우 유용한 가르침인 것이다.

This article is a thesis that analyzes the literary quality inherent in『Avatamska Sutra』by approaching 「A Study on the Avatamsaka Sutra」from the aspect of Buddhist literature. The content of this paper was analyzed in two aspects. First, in Chapter Ⅱ, the understanding of Buddhist literature, the characteristics of Buddhist transmission, the understanding of the Avatamsaka Sutra, and the point of contact between literature and Buddhism were examined in Chapter Ⅱ. And in Chapter Ⅲ,『Avatamsaka Sutra』analyzed from the aspect of Buddhist literature was analyzed based on the literary metaphor contained in the name of ‘Avatamska’, the characteristics of『Avatamska Sutra』in prose, and the four viewpoints of literature contained in Avatamsaka Sutra. The fact that can be known through this analysis is that the Buddhist literature contained in “A Study on the Avatamska Sutra’s Literary Character-Available in Buddhist Literature” is a concept that can be related to the literary interpretation of the author using Buddhist materials as the subject. Therefore, it is important in that it plays a role in clarifying the religious character and domain of Buddhism while negotiating literature and Buddhism. In particular, it can be seen that Avatamsaka Sutra contains useful teachings that help us to restore our Buddha nature by purifying our inner world in the three poisons. Therefore, it was confirmed that in the Avatamsaka Sutra, which was analyzed as Buddhist literature, the teachings that led to the first right enlightenment [正覺] were presented in various literary genres, metaphors, and forms. The metaphorical expression of ‘Avatamska’ contained in the name of the sutras implies that in order for all beings to enter enlightenment, the Bodhisattva, a practice of Buddhism, should be solemnized with the aid and information. This is a very useful teaching in Buddhist literature.
