Additional information

I should like to thank my friends Anton Blok, who first calledÜber den Prozess der Zivilisation to my attention, and Johan Goudsblom, who explained the finer points with kindly forbearance. What follows will be old news to them and other Dutch colleagues, whose easy access to German has made the books of Norbert Elias a lively force in academic culture. For nearly a decade, Goudsblom, in particular, has bent every effort to gain Elias a just hearing among sociologists; and if this brief account ofUber den Prozess der Zivilisation says little about the work he and others have done in this regard, it is because accidents of language and geography have confined their impact to a country in whose intellectual life foreigners take little interest. More's the pity, because those who have in many ways done most to tend the flame of interest inÜber den Prozess der Zivilisation over the years have received least credit now that the book has surfaced elsewhere.
