Jacek Tarkowski: In Memoriam

Abstract

The new Poland has lost one of its most vigorous voices — a voice that was increasingly heard not only in his native land but also in the international scholarly community. Jacek Tarkowski died of a heart attack on November 3, 1991, at the peak of his powers, at the age of 53. A member of the Polish Institute of Sociology, he was a visiting fellow at Oxford and at the Woodrow Wilson Center, a visiting professor in Norway, India and the US, and had lectured at more than forty universities around the world. A few of his shorter socio-political studies have recently been translated into English, some of them in the pages of Telos, but the bulk of Tarkowski's work remains unknown outside Poland.
