Immigration between Liberalism and Populism: Reply to Palti

Abstract

Elías José Palti is simply wrong when he asserts that Telos officially supports California's Proposition 187; it is true, however, that the journal has published some differentiated statements regarding 187 which, more significantly, try to posit the theoretical and political grounds of a possible immigration policy. Palti leaps to equate nuanced deliberation with unqualified support. Clearly there are many perspectives and aspects of the discussion. Yet, for Palti, the real scandal is that Telos, which he describes as a “self-designated ‘progressive'” journal, has broken ranks with what he presumes to be the only possible ‘leftist’ response to 187, i.e., complete and unqualified rejection.
