Abstract
Definition of the problem Cognitive enhancement through psychotropic drugs and other technical interventions has lately commanded the attention of both academic ethicists and the general public. Although the state of the art in cognitive enhancement remains rather poor to this day, a lively discussion is currently underway about what may be the advantages and disadvantages of highly efficient cognitive enhancers. Yet what has been lacking so far is an article that provides a brief overview of the arguments that can be advanced in favour of and against cognitive enhancement. Arguments Starting from a close definition of cognitive enhancement, this paper systematically presents a substantial number of reasons for and against efficient cognitive enhancement. Some of the arguments judge cognitive enhancement technologies per se, others refer to the consequences that cognitive enhancers could have for individuals who use it, and some more arguments outline the possible effects of cognitive enhancement for society as a whole. Particular attention is given to the “philosophical issues” associated with cognitive enhancement, that is, to the question of whether the use of enhancement technologies will have an impact on our idea of mankind and on other parts of the epistemic fundamentals of our culture. Conclusion Instead of drawing a conclusion, the paper will consider the fact that appropriate ethical analyses of enhancement technologies cannot be done on an abstract level, but have to take into account all technical details of the enhancement technologies in question.
