Abstract

The deeper logic of the so-called “Gretchen tragedy” only becomes visible when the events are investigated in the context of the European epic system. Margarete’s guilt, as well as the guilt of her typological precursors (Medea, Dido, Eve) cannot be solved without considering the role of the man in what happens, including the killing of the child.

Zusammenfassung

Die tiefere Logik der sogenannten „Gretchen Tragödie” wird erst dann sichtbar, wenn die Ereignisse im Rahmen des europäischen Epos-Systems untersucht werden. Margaretes Schuld, so wie die Schuld ihrer typologischen Vorbilder — Medea / Dido / Eva -, läßt sich nicht ohne die Frage nach dem Anteil des Mannes am Geschehen, auch am Töten des Kindes, lösen.
