Die Geburt der Kunst aus dem Ekel am Dasein. Die philosophische Relevanz ästhetischer Erfahrungen bei Nietzsche und Sartre

From the book Nietzsche und der französische Existenzialismus

  • Jens Bonnemann

Abstract

Comparisons between Nietzsche and Sartre are a rather unusual subject in philosophical study, all the more in regard to the field of aesthetics. In this paper, however, I lay the focus on the early thinking of both philosophers, namely on Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy and Sartre’s Nausea. The central question I envisage in this essay is to what extent both Nietzsche’s and Sartre’s notions of art are grounded on a nihilistic- aesthetic worldview. As to that, I will point out the similarities and differences between these two positions within philosophical aesthetics, in both of which art takes over the function of religion.
