30 Spinoza and the Universal Set: A Proposal

From the book Ontology of Divinity

  • Meir Buzaglo

Abstract

According to the prevailing position these days in the discussion of infinity, one should distinguish and separate mathematical discussion from metaphysical- theological discussion. According to the position that emerges from Cantor’s writing, these two fields should be distinguished, but not separated. Cantor was able to express his position in the context of a critique of Spinoza’s pantheism. In this article I attempt to respond on behalf of Spinoza to Cantor’s criticism. If one reads a Spinozist position into the realm of sets, a set theory emerges that includes a universal set. In this article I have taken the first steps towards such a theory of sets, and added comments on the cross-fertilization that exists between the metaphysical discussion and the mathematical discussion on the subject of infinity.
