Zusammenfassung
Während das französische Wort grandeur und sein deutsches Äquivalent (›Größe‹) in der Physik lediglich mit der Möglichkeit der Messbarkeit in Verbindung gebracht werden, sodass auch in allen Hinsichten ganz kleine Dinge eine Größe haben können, ist es ganz anders um grandeur bestellt, wenn man sie in einem moralischen Sinn versteht. Unter grandeur ist dann, so der Larousse (Ausgabe von 1989), eine Eigenschaft zu verstehen, durch die ein Mensch sich auszeichnet, wie etwa sein Einfluss, sein Rang, sein Wert, seine Wichtigkeit. Wie kein anderer Denker vor – und auch nach – ihm, hat Tocqueville sich eingehend mit den Auswirkungen der Demokratie auf die grandeur befasst.
