Zusammenfassung

Der 16. Band des bei Gallimard erschienenen Gesamtwerkes enthält, auf drei Seiten, Aufzeichnungen, die Tocqueville um 1836/37 über Platon gemacht hat. In Briefen an Louis de Kergorlay (OC XIII, 1, 388) und Pierre-Paul Royer-Collard (OC XI, 19), beide im August 1836 in Baden verfasst, weist Tocqueville darauf hin, dass er u. a. dabei ist, Platon zu lesen. Obwohl Tocqueville die spiritualistische Grundausrichtung der Platonischen Philosophie mit ihrem strikten Dualismus gutheißt, gibt es doch einige Elemente dieser Philosophie, die im Widerspruch zu den liberalen Prämissen des Tocquevilleschen Denkens stehen.
