Abstract
This paper presents a historical analysis of texts that come from an archival record of Cartagena de Indias between 1715 and 1717. The autos are administrative texts that have various functions in the institutional relations between the metropolis and colonies, such as that of “providing an opinion”. In the autos, this function is referred as consulta or parecer, and is characterized by the use of doxastic predicates. For the analysis, we have adopted the theoretical perspectives provided by the historical analysis of discourse and historical sociopragmatics. The study is completed by a quantitative analysis that enables the identification of those linguistic features that are linked to the intensification and mitigation in debates, a subtype of autos found in the Spanish of the eighteenth century in Cartagena. The results suggest that the identified linguistic resources increase the persuasive intent of the argumentation that is characteristic of the Cartagenian autos.
