Introduction

Abstract

Far from being exhausted in the previous two issues, the question of new social movements is receiving more attention than ever. Moving on a broader theoretical level than most previous contributors, Heller and Feher carefully examine the antinomies of anti-nuclear and peace movements. In doing so, they dispel a number of simplistic assumptions about these movements by placing their concerns within a wider ethical and historical framework. In the way of a preview of his new book — the second volume of Devant la Guerre — Castoriadis discusses aspects of the general crisis of Western societies, especially the United States.
