Aristotle and fair deals

Abstract

When is an exchange a fair exchange? And when is a deal (an agreement to make an exchange) a fair deal? These questions are undeniably central to the philosophical understanding of value issues in business. In this paper I analyze Aristotle's account of fairness (“justice”) in such matters and attempt a critical extension.

Ronald A. Cordero was born in 1940. He received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962 and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1969. He is currently an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. His research and publications are primarily in the areas of ethics and business ethics.
