Genetic Structure and Avian Systematics

Abstract

Systematics has as its overall objective the ordering of taxa of organisms into a hierarchical scheme. To achieve a natural classification, one that reflects the evolutionary history and relationships of the organisms involved, the systematist should ideally have methods that enable the attainment of the following five intermediate objectives of classification: (1) the variation within species must be rigorously described so that individuals can be assigned unambiguously to species, (2) the evolutionary relationships among the species considered must be reconstructed, (3) estimates should be obtained for rates of evolutionary change along genetic lineages through geological time, (4) the structure within species should be characterized, and (5) the boundaries of taxa above and below that of the species must be delineated objectively.
