The term introduced by Tadeusz Różewicz, Polish poet and dramatist, at the beginning of the 1960s, found its way into social consciousness.

There are no monuments dedicated to Tsars or Emperors of occupying states, their generals or marshals, in Poland, either. Yet, there is a continuing strong admiration for Napoleon.

Freytag was born in Kreuzburg (now Kluczbork). Works of Freytag, who was known to hold anti-Polish views, were not published or staged in Poland. There is no street in Kluczbork bearing his name.
