Abstract

Il processo del prefetto delle Gallie Arvando nel 468/469 offre spunti di riflessione sulla crisi imperiale in Occidente sotto il regno di Antemio. Nelle province galliche rappresenta il palesarsi di un orientamento eversivo, disposto a sostituire la sovranità dell’impero con quella dei regni barbarici in formazione, ma al tempo stesso offre al legittimismo delle grandi famiglie dell’aristocrazia senatoria l’occasione di manifestarsi con vigore. A Roma il ruolo del senato nella vicenda si rivela determinante per giungere a una sentenza di compromesso in grado di ritardare lo scoppio delle ostilità fra l’imperatore e Ricimero, destinate a esplodere un anno dopo.
