Olympics of Nationalism: Notes on the Gorz-Bahro Controversy

Abstract

It is surprising and alarming to see how quickly and unimpededly the combination of the peace movement and the Polish crisis has caused nationalism to flare up in Europe. The Left has been no exception. On the contrary, it seems to feel called on to set the pace for the permissible extent of ethnocentric and particularistic patterns of argument. Never since the origin of the New Left has there been so little communication and discussion, so little transnational contact. The Left, too, has — who could have foreseen this a few years ago? — become nationalized.

Examples of this lack of communication are the interview with André Gorz and Rudolf Bahro's reply.
