Diese Arbeit untersucht an Hand von Raabes Roman das Verhältnis zwischen dem kulturellen Diskurs von Altertumskunde und Altertumswissenschaft und die von ihnen gespielten Rollen in der Auffassung deutscher nationaler wie auch persönlicher Identität. Sie konzentriert sich auf die sprachliche Identität dreier Hauptfiguren — das Odfeld, Ferdinand und Magister Buchius — und die Vermischung des Fremden und Lokalen als Grund für Deutschtum.

Abstract

This essay uses Raabe’s novel to explore the relations between the cultural discourses of Altertumskunde and Altertumswissenschaft and the roles they played in the formation of German identity, both national and personal. It focuses on the linguistic identity of three major characters — the Odfeld itself, Duke Ferdinand, and Magister Buchius — and the compounded mixture in each of the foreign and indigenous as the ground for ›Germanness‹.
