It is worth noting that Floridi is not the first to insist that information must be true. A notable predecessor is Dretske (1981). And Fetzer is not the first to deny this. A notable critic of Dretske on this point is Nunberg (1996). It is interesting that Floridi himself did not always hold the veridicality thesis, cf. Floridi (1999, 106): “disinformation and propaganda are still forms of information, no matter whether wrong or incorrect.”
Incidentally both Floridi and Fetzer were anticipated by Dretske (1981, 45) when he wrote: “false information and mis-information are not varieties of information—any more than decoy ducks and rubber ducks are kinds of ducks.”
