윤리적 언어란 무엇인가? 언어는 기본적으로 사고를 표현하고 정보를 공유하는 데에 있다. 언어의 이 같은 기능은 삶 속 존재 유지에 충분하지 않은가? 하지만, 이것은 자기를 밖으로 드러내는 행위에 그친다. 바꾸어 말하면, 이것은 타자를 자기안으로 맞아들이지 않는다. 레비나스에게 언어란 접촉, 어루만짐, 가까움으로써 타자를 책임지는 것으로 이해된다. 이것은 감성의 양상이고 시간을 참조하게 한다. 그리고 말함이 바로 이것들을 함유한다. 존재론에 종속됨이 없는 말함, 이것은 앎의 말해진 것과는 달리, 타자를 받아들이기 위해 발가벗겨진 투명한 마음을 드러낸다. 내 편의 ‘결정’없이 이루어지는 수동성으로서 타자로의 나의 노출. 수동성은 자기에-반해 타자를 위한 책임에 사로잡힌 수동성이다. 이 수동성은 레비나스의 사유 안에서 말함과 책임을 설명하기 위한 특별한 지위를 지닌다. 주체의 지위는 폐위(déposition)이다. 이것은 말함의 주체성을 규정하는 특성이다. 복종의 명령에 따르는 주체는 명령의 들음 이전에 명령에 응답한다. 이것은 타자의 얼굴과의 만남에서 일어난다. 우리는 여기서 언어와 말함의 윤리적 가능성을 발견할 수 있다.
