Der Brief als Bau-Element des Erzählens. Zum Funktionswandel des Einlagebriefes im neueren Roman, dargelegt am Beispiel von Dostojewski, Thomas Mann, Kafka und Joyce

Zusammenfassung

Vor dem entwicklungsgeschichtlichen Hintergrund der Briefkunst wird der Rollenwandel von Einlagebriefen im europäischen Roman dargelegt, speziell die Ablösung dekorativer durch mimetische Funktionen seit dem 18. Jhd. sowie im modernen Roman die schrittweise Verlagerung des erzählerischen Interesses auf die Reaktionen des Briefempfängers. Zunehmend gelangen dabei Probleme der Kommunikation als solche zur Darstellung, bis schließlich in Joyces Finnegans Wake Brief und Roman völlig miteinander verschmelzen.

Abstract

On the background of the general development of epistolography, the changing role of interspersed letters in the European novel is discussed, particularly the supersession of their decorative functions by mimetic ones since the 18th century, in connection with the modern novel’s gradual shift of narrative interest to the reactions of the addressee — a typological process increasingly focussing on problems of communication as such and culminating in a complete fusion of letter and novel in Joyce’s Finnegans Wake.
