Althusser's Marxism

Alex Callinicos, Althusser's Marxism. London and New York: Pluto Press Ltd. and Urizen, 1976. 130 pages.

Abstract

Due to the usual problems of translation there is a considerable time warp regarding Althusser's published works. While critics who have followed the great Althusser controversy in French may have long since dismissed him, a new “problematic” is created by the more recent English publication of his books. There is, then, a need for a book which provides a critical assessment of Althusser for those who will now be reading him for the first time in English.

Callinicos' work is promoted by the publisher's blurb as the first book-length study in English of the ideas of the French Communist philosopher.
