이 글은 포퓰리즘이 민주주의와 맺는 관계를 포퓰리즘의 이중성이라는 관점에서 도출하고자 한다. 즉 포퓰리즘은 민주주의의 위기라는 현실 속에서 상실된 인민주권의 목소리를 표현한다는 점에서 정당한 민주주의적 에너지를 갖는다. 반면 포퓰리즘은 또한 반지성주의와 권위주의에 함몰될 위험 역시 내포하고 있다. 그렇다면 우리가 도출할 수 있는 결론은 포퓰리즘의 민주주의적 에너지가 권위주의로 빠질 위험을 경계하면서도, 그 에너지를 통해 현재의 민주주의의 위기에 적극적으로 대응할 수 있는 ‘민주주의의 급진화’를 위한 흐름들을 만들어가려는 노력을 중단해서는 안 된다는 것이다. 이를 논의하기 위해 이 글은 포퓰리즘과 민주주의의 관계를 사고하는 다양한 논의들을 참고하며, 오늘날 포퓰리즘의 에너지들이 어떻게 민주주의 자체의 민주화를 위한 방향으로 승화될 수 있는가를 검토한다.

In this article, I attempt to derive the relationship between populism and democracy from the point of view of the duality of populism. In other words, populism has its legitimate democratic energy in that the voice of the people's sovereignty which has been lost in the crisis of democracy is expressed. Populism, on the other hand, also carries the risk of being submerged in anti-intellectualism and authoritarianism. Then, the conclusion we can draw is to create sustainedly a flow of ‘radicalization of democracy’ that can actively respond to the current crisis of democracy through that energy while wary of the risk of populism's democratic energy falling into authoritarianism. To discuss this, this article refers to various discussions about the relationship between populism and democracy, and examines how the energies of populism today can be sublimated toward the democratization of democracy itself.
