Metaphysics and Modern Physics

A Prolegomenon to the Understanding of Quantum Theory

  • Chapter
Contemporary Research in the Foundations and Philosophy of Quantum Theory

Part of the book series: The University of Western Ontario Series in Philosophy of Science ((WONS,volume 2))

Abstract

Everyone who has studied the quantum theory knows that it is a ‘problem’ theory — ever since its inception the debate concerning its interpretation and finality has raged. To-day the debate still rages, the flames fanned no less by those of all persuasions who claim that there is no ‘problem’ with quantum theory as by their opponents. There is, unhappily, neither agreement as to precisely what the problem really is not yet as to what the solution is (of course!). The 40 year history of quantum theory has made one thing clear: no solution to the ‘problem’ is easy, nothing simpleminded works — members of all persuasions, including those who claim to have removed the problems, are forced to go through elaborate argument in order to make their positions seem workable.
