Abstract

TheMathesis biceps vetus et nova, published in 1670 by Juan Caramuely y Lobkowitz, contains a mathematical treatment of the games of dice and the Genoese lottery. This work has been rarely and incompletely discussed in the classical literature concerned with the early history of probability. The goal of this paper is an exposition of the main features of Caramuel's approach and its links with Huygens' work.
