The Politics of Subjectivity: Notes on Marxism, the Movement, and Bourgeois Society

Abstract

Theoretical contributions on and for a white left seem irrelevant if not intolerable. Irrelevant because the object of any discussion, stable and well defined political groups has passed from the scene — excepting the Marxist sects: and because the loose participants of the left have themselves passed from political activities that include reading and theory to political (and non-political) activities that preclude it — movies, music, drugs, and the rest. To bemoan this is already to mystify the reasons that brought it about. To ignore it, is to acquiesce. And intolerable because the theory — and theoretician — which is to reflect on a general situation seems to exclude itself from that very situation; it passes judgement from without.
