본 연구의 목적은 칸트 철학에서 최고선 촉진의 의무에 대한 하나의 대안적 이해를 제시하는 것이다. 최고선 개념이 가진 다양한 의미로 말미암아 과연 칸트의 철학체계 내에서 최고선 촉진의 의무가 정당한 윤리적 의무로서 받아들여질 수 있는지, 그리고 그것이 인간에게 부과하는 의무의 내용은 무엇인지 등이 이제껏 논의의 대상이 되어 왔다. 첫째로 본 연구는 최고선 촉진의 의무가 윤리적 의무의 형식적 조건을 충족하며, 따라서 칸트 철학의 체계적 완결성을 해치지 않는다고 주장한다. 둘째로는 칸트가 제1비판서에서 최고선 촉진의 의무의 규범적 지위를 주장할 때 이미 합목적성 및 반성적 판단력의 개념에 의존하고 있으며, 따라서 칸트 윤리학의 틀만으로는 최고선 촉진의 의무의 의미를 온전히 새기기 어렵다고 주장한다.

In this research, I attempt to suggest an alternative interpretation to settle the issue related with “the duty to promote the highest good” in Kantian philosophy. Due to the diversity of definitions of the highest good, there have been discussions about its status in Kantian Ethics, such as if it can be accepted as a proper duty in Kant’s system and what it exactly obliges to human being. Firstly, herein I would argue the duty to promote the highest good satisfies formal conditions of moral duty, hence it does not undermine the integrity of Kantian philosophy. Secondly, I would argue that Kant relies on the concept of purposiveness and reflective judgment when he demonstrates its normative status already in the first Critique, thus its meaning cannot be fully comprehended within the bare framework of ethical formalism.
