The list includes scholars, scientists, artists, men of letters, politicians, doctors, technicians and other members of the professional classes. The list comprises some 4,400 names. About half of those listed were either shot by the firing-squads of the German army or perished in the concentration camps. All the universities were closed down, many libraries were destroyed or removed to Germany. The same applies to the equipment of research institutes. Individuals suffered losses to their private book collections and manuscripts of works prepared for publication. In the Warsaw rising (1944) a whole generation of graduates and young research-workers, some of them of great promise, was decimated in the fighting against the Germans or exterminated by atrocities inflicted upon the population of the devastated but unconquered city.
