스피노자 철학에서 예속의 문제는 핵심을 이룬다. 그는 예속의 원인과 영향을 해명하는 과정에서 두 가지 물음을 제기하는데, 하나는 “어째서 인간은 더 좋은 것을 알면서도 더 나쁜 것을 따를 정도로 예속되는가?”이고, 다른 하나는 “어째서 인간은 마치 자기 자신의 구원이기라도 한 듯 스스로의 예속을 욕망하는가?”이다. 이와 같이 스피노자에게 인간의 비합리성과 수동성은 주요 분석대상이다. 나는 이 점에 주목하여 어째서 인간이 예속으로부터 해방되기 어려운지를 탐구한다. 특히 그 이유를 예속의 사회적 측면, 곧 정념에 의한 인간 상호관계의 왜곡으로부터 찾을 것이다. 인간은 다른 이들과 일치하기를 원하며, 다른 이들이 자기 자신과 동일한 정서를 느끼기를 원한다. 하지만 인간은 서로 합치하지 못하는데, 정념에 종속된 인간은 상반되고 또한 서로를 증오하기 때문이다. 정념으로 인해 필연적으로 갈등이 발생한다. 결국 인간은 하나의 공동체를 형성할 수도 상호간의 유대관계를 맺을 수도 없다. 이것이 바로 예속의 사회적 측면이다. 이처럼 현실상의 인간이 자유롭기보다 예속되어 있고 자기 자신의 지복을 원하기 보다 슬픔과 증오에 사로잡힌 까닭이 분석될 것이다. 이러한 논의를 통해, 스피노자에게 예속의 문제설정이 가지는 의미와 중요성을 고찰하고 나아가 합리주의와 주지주의 철학 또는 순수 긍정과 기쁨의 철학이라는 외피 아래 감춰졌던 스피노자 철학의 진면목을 드러내고자 한다.

In Spinoza’s philosophy, human servitude is an essential issue. He raises two questions in the process of explaining the cause and effect of servitude: One is, “Why are human beings to be subjected that they know what is better but they follow the worse?”, the other is, “Why do human beings desire their servitude just like their own salvation?” Human irrationality and passivity are important subjects for Spinoza. I will focus on this point and research why it is difficult for humans beings to be freed from servitude. In Particular, I will search for the reason into the social aspect of servitude, that is, the perversion of inter-human relationship by passions. Human beings want to reach agreement with others. They also desire others to feel the same affects as they do. However, it is hard to agree with each other, because those who are subjected to passions are contrary to others and become to hate each others. The conflicts necessarily occur due to passions. Consequently, they can neither form a community nor bond with each other. This is the social aspect of servitude. In this way, the study analyzes the reason why actual human beings are subjected rather than being free, and why they are exhausted by sadness and hate rather than desiring their own beatitude. Through this argument, I will examine the meaning and importance of the issue of servitude for Spinoza and clarify the true feature of Spinozism hidden under the guise of the rationalism and intellectualism or the philosophy of pure affirmation and joy.
