Abstract

Reformation and „Barbarenblut“: Nietzsche’s Reactivation of an Anti- Reformatory Topos and Luther as a ‘Ruler-Individual’ in GS 149. In a first step, the article shows that the image of Luther as a ‘barbarian’ in Nietzsche reactivates an anti-reformatory topos of the 16th century. Then, after briefly sketching the concept of ‘barbarism’ in the history of ideas, GS 149 is interpreted against the background of the source material. In doing so, the article finally points out some hermeneutic difficulties concerning the construal of Nietzsche’s statements on Luther as a ‘barbarian’.
