Whatever an ontology of chance a philosopher has presented, the theory should explain that the chance identified by that theory has to constrain ones’ credence according to the Principal Principle, David Lewis said. Otherwise, the theory fails to identify the chance. Lewis claimed that only Humean approaches to chance including his Best System Analysis to chance do satisfy this criterion of adequacy for metaphysics of chance. However, Ned Hall has argued that Lewis was overly optimistic about his approach, for there is a case that the chance identified by the Best System Analysis cannot constrain ones’ credence according to the Principal Principle. The purpose of this paper is to rescue the Best System Analysis from Hall’s challenge. I will argue that some of the premises on which Hall’s argument against Lewis’ theory depend are false or insufficient to support his argument. To do so, in section 2, Lewis’ Best System Analysis to chance will be introduced. In Section 3, Lewis’ Principal Principle will then be explained. Section 4 will examine Hall’s objection that the relationship between the chance identified by the Best System Analysis and the credence cannot satisfy the Principal Principle; especially his argument will be reorganized to be more precise. Finally, it will be argued that his counter-argument fails to claim that the Humean chance that Lewis has defined does not satisfy the criterion of adequacy for an ontology of chance in section 5.
