Drive and Will in Fichte’s System of Ethics

From the book The Concept of Will in Classical German Philosophy

  • Manja Kisner

Abstract

In this paper, I argue that the concept of will in Fichte’s System of Ethics (1798) is closely connected to the concept of drive (Trieb). To show this, I first explicate Fichte’s notion of drive and after that the relation between the drive and the will. In Fichte’s system, the concept of drive functions as an intermediary link between the domain of nature and freedom and as such is central for explaining Fichte’s theory of the will. The link between these two concepts enables Fichte to describe the will in dynamic terms and to point out the activity of the will.
