Abstract
To what extent is Michel Foucault’s history of sexuality a genealogy that observes the model of Nietzsche, and furthermore employs Nietzsche’s account or portrayal of power relations? This study assesses the relationship between Foucault’s History of Sexuality Volume I (1976), and Nietzsche’s On the Genealogy of Morality (1887) - a work of pronounced and long-standing interest to Foucault - through close attention to Foucault’s engagement with Nietzsche’s thought, dating from the 1960s through his lectures at the College de France, and with a particular focus on the lectures of 1973 through 1978 (published as Psychiatric Power, Abnormal, “Society MustBe Defended” and Security, Territory, Population). This study contends that Nietzsche’s GM provided the foundation for key aspects of Foucault’s alternative to the “repressive hypothesis” and his critical appraisal of the scientia sexualis. In particular, in his account of the ascendance of the ascetic priest in relation to the ‘knightly’ noble, Nietzsche identified key actors and components of power relations that Foucault was to carefully exploit in his critique of the psychiatric asylum, psychoanalysis, and their relationship to the power strategies of the modern state.
Zusammenfassung
Inwieweit ist Michel Foucaults Geschichte der Sexualität eine Genealogie, die Nietzsches Modell im Auge hat und seiner Darstellung der Machtverhältnisse folgt? Diese Studie befasst sich mit der Beziehung zwischen Foucaults Histoire de la Sexualite, Bd. I (1976), und Nietzsches Zur Genealogie der Moral (1887), ein Werk, das Foucaults ausgeprägtes und langjähriges Interesse fand. Sie verfolgt möglichst genau Foucaults Auseinandersetzung mit Nietzsches Denken, die von den 1960er Jahren bis zu seinen Vorlesungen am College de France reichte, und richtet den Fokus besonders auf die Vorlesungen von 1973 bis 1978 (veröffentlicht als Le Pouvoir psychatrique, Les Anormaux, „Ilfaut defendre la societe“ und Securite, territoire, population). Sie stellt die These auf, dass Nietzsches GM das eigentliche Fundament sei für Schlüsselaspekte von Foucaults Alternative zur „Repressions-Hypothese“ und seiner kritischen Würdigung der scientia sexualis. Insbesondere in seiner Darstellung des Aufstiegs des asketischen Priesters gegenüber den Vornehmen identifizierte Nietzsche Schlüsselakteure und -komponenten von Machtverhältnissen, die Foucault in seiner Kritik an der psychiatrischen Klinik, der Psychoanalyse und ihrer Beziehung zu den Machtstrategien des modernen Staates mit großem Bedacht heranzog.
